Colombia -> Ecuador Popayan/Pasto safety ?

Hi

Looked at postings (both crossings & travel safety) & not seen any since about a year ago.

I aim to be passing thru Colombia very soon, hoping to pass through Popayan to Pasto.

Has anyone any updated info from recent times ? It would be appreciated.

(If my transport deal Panama -> Cartagena) comes off I'll be posting the good news on this site soon)

Thanks
Scouse

Papayan Safety

Hi, I rode south this way last year on my way south to Tierra del Fuego, crossing Colombia from Cartagena. Popayan is wonderful. The views to the north are magnificent. No trouble other than the cold and a puncture up in the mountains. A farmer helped, taking me and the wheel in his jeep to the nearest puncture repair specialist! You may find something of interest on my BLOG from that period at home
Have fun,

thanks :)

Thanks Simon, your blog makes interesting reading & you`re doing great :))

Given the recent announcement by the USA on internal flights I just wondered if anyone had very recent experience at the southern end of Colombia bordering with Ecuador along the Pan Am.

Cheers
Graham btw you`re trip is a bit of an inspiration :)

I rode solo from Bogota through Colombia into Ecuador on the PanAm Hwy about 4 weeks ago, with no problems whatsoever. Superb countryside, and people were very friendly at all times, even the military and policia checkpoints.:thumbup1:

When you get to Popayan, ask the locals what is going on. I was there about 2 months ago and the military was having a few fights with guerillas in the hills. No problem if you stay on the PanAM, just ask before you go exploring.

The road between Pasto and the boarder is one of my favorites. Really great scenery. I have done it 4 times.

Hi Jeff

Our lass flew direct to Quito whilst I´m coming down the Pan Am. With the recent hostage taking of 5 nationals & 1 norwegian there are more military checkpoints than you can shake a stick at ... 12 between Cali & Popayan.

I´m not having a look around this time, just enjoyin the scenes & now lookin fwd to the route.

I expect to be in Quito Sunday nite & would like to find a trailwing tyre !

Not sure how long we´ll be there but would like to meet for a beer :)

Cheers

Albert at the Turtles Head knows all the decent bike shops.

Perelli (sp?) has a factory in Brazil - so their tires are easiest and the cheapest to find. Again, ask Albert if you really want a trailwing.

I like Beer.....

Too bad about the stoopid FARCs. That part of the country is beautiful.
