Getting the best out of yor tyres
Hey all,
I need to do 2000km high speed motorways on some fairly fragile 80/20 tyres before I really put them to work on some fun gravel/sand/who knows what. I guess cornering is not going to be a big wear item and understand going hard on the front brake is not going to do the knob profile any good. Also I know that hard accellaration is going to do bad things to knob profile. HOwever, any advice on keeping the tyre in best condtion as possible for long motorwat miles. I really want to maintain a decent speed on motorways but not sure what sort of additional wear this will put on a fragile compound. Any advice or experince is alway welcome Dave |

Option 2: start your trip on crappy/old/worn tires and arrange a new pair to be waiting for you at a tire shop near the start of the good bits. Option 3, really 2.5: get really good with your tire levers, and toss a spare set of tires around your topbox. Steady motorway miles on cruise control without much breaking or accelerating will make a difference, but only so much. |
The only things I can add to the above is to take it easy on the speed, cruising at 100kph or less is going to wear them a lot less than 120kph, and to run the pressure a bit higher, eg. if for normal mixed use you have them at about 16psi then pump them up to 25 for the motorway section.

Turbofurball is right, it’s speed that will wear your tyres quickly - I travelled slowly, alongside a 411 Himmie (very rarely exceeding 58 mph) and got 24K miles out of a rear Dunlop Trailmax Mission. There was still some tread left when I changed.

Thanks for that.
Yes ideally I would carry the 80/20s for the main motorway section and I am quite happy to change them myslef, but it does take time and not being in the ideal place without the garage tools means it will take time and there is the oppertunity for someting to go wrong and leave me in trouble. The speed advice is of great use. I will put a bit of extra pressure in the tyres too. Cheers Dave |

They’re difficult to mount but shouldn’t be too difficult to get off. If you’re trip begins and ends with motorway perhaps you could find a place to change and leave them for the return journey. |
