Ian Coates ? anybody seen him recently ?
Hello everybody out there,
my friend and travel partner IAN COATES, riding an Africa Twin with british number plate, he is around 60 years old and a british citizen. the last time his friends and his wife had news was on 29.09.2005 from Barichara, Province of Santander in Colombia, South America He was on his way to Venezuela. Please let me know if you met him after the 29.09.2005, some people are starting to worry. mikakuhn (at) web.de Thank you Mika from Berne Switzerland ------------------ |
Sorry, we haven´t heard from Ian since the 19th Sept when he was in Bogata. However we know he stayed with Paul Thoresen in Medellin at Casa Kiwi. I´m not sure of the dates but I´ll email Paul and ask. Also, I know Ian had had some problems with a broken clutch leaver and a couple of other things which slowed him down. I have a couple of other contacts in the north of Colombia who he may have met up with and email them. Fingers crossed. Please let us know if you hear from him.

Ian stayed with me at my hostel Casa Kiwi in Medellin for about one week mid September. From Medellin he was headed to eastern Colombia, on his way to Venezuela. He said he was to meet a friend in Venezuela, and then planned to return to Colombia. I haven't heard anything from him since September 29th when he sent an update from Barichara.
I'll be sure to post an update if I hear anything. Saludos, Paul. |

We had a guest in my hostel in Medellin November 23rd, who said that he had just been with Ian in Merida, Venezuela. Tony is a friend of Ian's from the UK. Apparently Ian has been in Merida for a while, and is just fine, but can't drive at the moment because of a hurt shoulder.
At least we know that he got out of Colombia without any problems, and was fine a week ago. I remember Ian as not being a particularily internet savy individual, so I don't think we need to be worried if he hasn't sent emails to anybody. Saludos, Paul - www.motoadventures.org |
Hi Paul,
so, this is good news, somebody met Ian just a week ago. You are right about Ian using the internet and two months is not that long for Ian not to contact anybody anyway. So I will let his wife and some other friends know, that he has been seen in Merida. Thanks Paul Mika |
yeah,
got an email from Ian the other day from Merida Venezuela, he is doing well on his way up to Trinidad and Tobago. thank you for all the answers mika ------------------ |
Ian and Judith Coates
I spent last weekend with them in Southern Mississippi, USA. Sunday, Ian, Judith, five other bikers, and my self went to eat at Chatom, Alabama, USA. The Coates are healthy, happy, and well. His bike is in transit to Panama. After he picks it up, he is planning a ride to Alaska. My friends and I have plans to meet up with him when he gets from Mexico back into the States.

Ian's in Panama
I have recieved an e-mail that Ian has made it to Panama. As you know of him, it may be 12-18 months before he gets back to the USA. He plans to tour all of Central America while on his "little bike ride". If I learn more, I will post here. Also, Judith is back home after touring with Ian.

I had the honour of meeting him at the Ride For Sight weekend in Olds, Alberta on June 12/13/14
I hope he writes a book about his journeys. I guarantee it'll be a best seller. John |
Very good John,

Dangerous colombia
Glad he turned up safe and sound. When ever someone goes awol in Colombia I worry about them. I travelled through colombia earlier this year and met some very ugly charactors and found myself in some very scarey situations.
Although I came through unscathed (but lighter in the wallet), I cannot stress enough how dangerous it can be there, particularly on the Pacific coasty side. I travelled from Panama City via tramp steamer to Buenaventure - I won´t recomend this route! You are better going via San Blas to Cartehena on a yacht. This way is more expensive, but you a far greater chance of getting there alive! |

Ian is in Canda
Hi all
Ian stayed with us on our farm in east central Alberta,Canada for 10 days in early July 2009 and we enjoyed him immensely. He is now riding up thru BC enroute to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He needs to be out of there by late Aug as the weather can then become a problem. Ian was very fit and rested and eager to continue on his journey to Alaska with plans to ride back down through BC and into the US to winter then to continue his quest next spring to ride across Siberia. Ian was introduced to us by HU members Pat and Belinda Peck. Pat was an old uni friend who I had lost touch with 33 years ago. John and Jerry-Lynn Burden |
ian coates
Ian is my father's cousin.
He's an absolute legend within our family and it's great to hear about his travels. I last saw Ian at my parents house a while ago when he was planning to go to his daughter's 18th birthday party. My favourite memory of Ian was in the middle of the funeral procession at my Gandmother's funeral ( Ian's aunty), Ian stopped the car, jumped out and proceeded to show his son how to fix a car at his garage in hebden bridge. He dived back in the car and we carried on. My gran would have loved that!! Anyway great to hear about him. Christopher Carter:thumbup1: |
Does Ian Only Ride Solo
Hello,
This is my first post here. I am currently working in Dawson Creek, Canada and I saw an article on Ian Coates. I have wanted to do a cross the world trip by bike for some years now and was very excited to see someone like him in Dawson. I was wondering if anyone knows if Ian will only ride solo. I would consider it a great honour to ride with a guy like him and would be particularly interested in the Alaska to Siberia portion of the trip. I have done a fair bit of traveling through Asia and Europe. Anyway, is there some way I could contact Mr. Coates? Email, or phone? Thanks very much, Samuel |
I knew Ian vaguely when in the UK.
He sent this email update...PM sent re email address...unsure whether he insists on solo...hopefully you'll be able to ask him. |
I had the pleasure of sharing a beer with Ian in Coldfoot last week. What an inspiring guy. Certainly seemed to be in good form after returning from South America. Strongly recommended the trip actually. He only plans to be on the road for another ten years or so, at this point :). Anyone who gets a chance to spend some time with this buy won't be disappointed.
|
I tried to circumvent the 8 post before you can PM rule but had 4 messages deleted so not sure whether you got my PM with Ians email address....or indeed whether this will also get deleted.:innocent:

Ian Coates at Arctic Ocean
Hi all
A recent email from Ian and he has put the wheels of his bike in the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and is now riding around Alaska and British Columbia, Canada John |
In work yesterday and one of the girls had "Chat" magazine.
A crappy womens gossip mag.. Inside was a 2 page spread about Ian Coates travelling around the world. Ok, the article was more about him abondoning his wife and about her not minding that has he has been gone 11 years ! What a girl !!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
:thumbup1:
God to know Ian is OK... |
Hi, I am very honored to know Ian Coates and his wife, Judith, very well. They have stayed with me several times here in the United States. Ian is currently in Canada and is in the process of planning and sorting out the details on his continued trip to Siberia and then eventually back to Hebden Bridge England where he is from. Ian generally travels solo on his adventures since he usually stays off the beaten path on his Honda Africa Twin but he always loves to share the road with whoever might be going in his direction. He's traveled now in well over 70 countries and he turned 66 years old this year back in June. Ian is one of the most fascinating people that you will ever meet and it is wonderful to hear about all the places he's been and all the things that he has seen in his many adventures. You can read about Ian if you Google his name, Ian Coates and you can also find him posted on YouTube. Ian is also a member of Facebook, so you could contact him through his Facebook page if you would like to contact him. I hope this may have been some help to you. Safe riding! Dee

Apparently he is on Vancouver Island at the moment
|
Saw his bike... :-)
I was on a ride last Sunday (Sept. 20th) and stopped in Port Renfrew for a break before resuming my ride to Lake Cowichan, Duncan and back to Victoria, and saw his bike parked at the Coastal Kitchen restaurant there.
Took note of the weathered look of the bike - took note of the Givi side case with it's 1999-2000 Cape Town to England lettering...didn't see him though... |
Wonder if Honda are getting their hands in their pockets to sort his bike...it's a testiment to Honda build quality that its going strong but you'd think they'd help out....

I met Ian in Washington State
Hello all,
Yesterday I was on a day ride on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state , USA. I had lunch with Ian, peanut butter sandwiches. He made his from bread and a jar, and I had the PB&J sandwich that I brought with me. We were in the very little town of Clallam Bay Washington on October 9, 2009 at about 2:00 PM. He had just come over to Port Angeles Washington on the Black Ball Ferry from Vancouver Island where he had been for several weeks. When I left him he was planning to ride out to Neah Bay which is the furthest west you can get in the continental US. After that he planned to ride around the Olympic peninsula and then back to Vancouver, BC Canada to make his way to Siberia then Mongolia. I very much enjoyed my brief time with Ian and wish him good luck on his travels. |
washington
we just met him in Clallam Bay Washington. And were fascinated by his loverly accent, and great stories. :-)
He says he's headed to Siberia...but not in the smart way other people do it, cause there's too much to see. |
Ian Coates
Hi everyone..... I've known Ian and his wife, Judith, for some time now and just wanted to give a short update on Ian. He has been staying in Canmore on a farm, 3 miles east of Edmonton, with a friend of his. Ian's motorcycle is on currently on a ship heading across the Bering Sea. Ian has now received his Visa to be able to continue on with his journey. He will be flying out of Vancouver, Canada on April 14th to Seoul, Korea where he will have to wait there for about 20 hours to make connections to Vladivostock, Russia. Ian will arrive in Vladivostock, Russia on April 16th and then will make his way to the Port to find his bike and once he finds his bike then will take on the task of putting it back together after having to break it down to fit it in the small crate that he had to ship it in. Ian jokes that maybe by the time he finally gets his bike put back together that he might even be speaking Russian by then...... Even though this is Ian's last leg of his Around the World Journey, it might still be some time before he reaches Hebden Bridge, England, which is home to Ian and his family. Ian plans on visiting as many of the countries as he can once he gets on the road in Russia before making his way back home to his wife, Judith, and family. Anyone who would like to read more about Ian and his travels can Google his name, Ian Coates, or you can contact Ian through his email address which is: coatesian ATTTTTT hotmail DOTTTTTY com Ian loves hearing from people and loves sharing his adventures from all of his travels and he is one of the most fascinating people I've ever had the privilege of knowing. We love you, Ian....... Be Safe........ Dee & Brent

Update on Ian Coates' Travels Around the World.......
Hello Everyone...... For all of you who have been keeping up with Ian Coates' travels around the world, I just received an email from him and he would like me to post this for him.
From Ian Coates - Wednesday, April 28, 2010: DEE, CAN YOU PUT THIS IN FOR ME PLEASE . I AM STILL WAITING FOR MY MOTOR BIKE TO GET TO VLADIVOSTOK BY SEA FROM SEATTLE, USA. I GOT HEAR ON THE 16-4-2010, MY BIKE SHOULD HAVE GOT HERE THE SAME DAY BUT THE SHIPPERS SAID IT NOW WOULD GET HERE ON THE 21-4-2010. ON THE 21-4-2010 THEY SAID IT WILL NOW GET HERE ON THE 27-4-2010. ON THE 27-4-2010 THEY SAID IT WOULD GET HERE ON THE 30-4-2010. I DO NOT THINK THEY KNOW WHERE THE SHIP IS AND WHEN IT WILL GET HERE, IT IS A RUSSIAN SHIP . IT WILL GET HERE WHEN IT GETS HERE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE RUSSIAN TV HERE ON MONDAY AND AGAIN ON TUESDAY AND BEEN INVITED TO A BIG BIKE RALLY HERE ON SUNDAY, ITS A 2 DAY RALLY . I AM STILL SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR OF THE IRON TIGERS MOTOR BIKE CLUB AND GARAGE, THEY CALL IT THE BOX. IT IS A LOT BETTER THAN MY TENT AND IT IS DRY . THEY ARE LOOKING AFTER ME VERY WELL AND I AM MEETING LOTS OF BIKERS. ITS BEEN VERY COLD HERE AND SNOWED LAST WEEK. NOW COLD AND WET BUT THATS OK I AM IN THE BOX . IAN |
Good to know news from Ian...
|
We have been hanging out with Ian all week while my bike has been fixed at the Iron Tigers headquarters. Great guy!
Spoke to him today at the Open Day bike rally. He is having major problems getting his bike into Russia. It has arrived, but Vlad customs will not release any of his gear. They are happy for him to have his bike, but everything else in his crate, including his helmet, tent and front wheel (as this was not actually attached to his bike) has been labelled "contraband" and they are saying it must be confiscated. He's going back on Tuesday to negotiate with them, but is having to think about shipping his bike to Korea or somewhere else, and then bringing it in again. I'm sure he would appreciate any advice people are able to give him. Cheers Rob 51st Traverse |
japan?
has he thought about shipping into Japan and then once in there leaving from Fushiki to Vladivostock by ferry?
its not necessary to have a carnet when entering Japan - they definitely prefer it - but it is poss without. we found entering japan no hasstle and leaving via the ferry extremely easy. all details of the ferry GPS co-ords for the offices etc...can be found on our website here: 2ridetheworld.com : diary hope this provides some ideas...... cheers |
Ian's farm stay
Ian came back to our farm in east-central Alberta after he had shipped his bike to Russia but was still waiting for his Russian visa. He was up bright and early in the morning and out to welcome the newborn calves. The rest of the day Ian could be found working in the shop helping to get the machinery ready for the planting season. He no sooner had made the statement that he had not had a cold for many many years and I noticed his voice disappearing. Well did he ever have a bad one and thank goodness he was here and was able to nurse himself back to health. Heres hoping for another 30 years of immunity Ian.
I have just returned from a month of motorcycling around India on Royal Enfields. You can all imagine the stories each evening around the dinner table with Ian's experiences. Now he reckons why not China and India. Actually plans are in the works to join him in China. John |
hi,
me and my motorbikefriend Martin have seen Ian Coates at the Bike-Festival in Kemerovo/Russia (18.06.2010-20.06.2010) Now he should be in Omsk to get his Visa for Kasachstan. Actually he is on the Way to visit the "stan" countrys. He thought, he would be in Germany in September this year; later than back at home greetings volker PS: later I will post a photo from this Meeting with Ian |
Now that is what I call adventure riding. At sixty years of age I have been debating the wisdom of an extended trip. Ian certainly is an inspiration.
|
Ian wrote me an Email few days ago.
May be (and i hope so) he would be in Germany at the end of Octobre. If anybody see him, then pick him up and drive with him to the meeting in Germany this Autumn. This would be great. Cheers volker |
hi volker
hi volker,
thank you for posting this here, I expected Ian to stay in Ukraine until next year ... but the summer is over now and maybe he wants to be next to his own heater for the winter, or he joins us on the boat to Brazil in the end of November. this means also that I could meet him in the UK in October or November, good news ... greetings from a wet campsite in Berlin mika |
Very good Mika!
Will you come to Brazil? :scooter: |

I personally met Ian In Sevastopol Bike Fest in my expedition to Magadan. Ian told me few tricks about riding in Siberia. |
Hey Dan:
I guess you have missed him. He showed up today near Burgas, Bulgaria. He is having some small problem with the bike, but nothing critical. He will be heading to Turkey after he fix his bike. But from what I am reading about him it might be some time before he leaves ;-) |
