Lap of Australia
Hi
Looking for some advice. I am looking to plan a lap of Australia next year by motorcycle. Any one got any advice as to when is best time ? Indeed any general advice Thanks |
Not an aussie and not an aussie expert at all but have ridden one and a half lap, around 30 k kms in Australia and weather-wise its should be something like this:
North coast is (very) wet from November to March South coast it can be miserable cold and wet from June to August. December to February/March can be very hot. January is the peak of school holidays etc so many places fully booked and prices are high. So depends where you want to start and which direction you want to ride of course. Maybe start around February-March if you begin from Vic or NSW and you should be able to go in any direction... |
Agree with the above. And when Snakeboy says "very wet", he doesn't just mean it rains a lot - many many roads are closed because they're under water. We just finished a drive that included the Kimberly, and most of the roads had "advisory boards" at the start, indicating whether they were open or closed, and to what kinds of vehicles.

Hi David. I am planning a lap next year, setting off from Esperance WA at the beginning of April and going to the HUBB meeting in WA, then going ACW around from there.
Southern parts may be slightly cooler then, but not unpleasant. You can expect rain at any time along the south coast. But it won't be rain like English rain, there will be plenty of sunny days and a better than even chance of a few frosty nights too. Tasmania will certainly be the wettest and coldest. I expect to be over on the northern side June and July, it should be quite human as regards temperatures then. My planning process is simply to keep the ocean on the right and do my best to stay away from SH1 whenever possible. I'm going to try and detour to Ayer's Rock and a few other excursions inland, not too sure exactly how or when yet. Quite a lot of make it up as I go. How more complicated does it need to get? |
