The Associated Press: Peru says 19 killed in rebel bomb attack
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Shining Path rebels ambushed a column of military trucks in Peru's southeastern mountains with a bomb and gunfire, the military high command said Friday, killing 12 soldiers and seven civilians in the deadliest rebel attack in years. Women and children were among those killed in the attack on the trucks, which were returning to the Cochabamba Grande base in Huancavelica province Thursday evening, the military said. I'm in Arica, northern Chile right now and I've been hearing about serious problems just across the border in southern Peru.
One of my workmates here got hung up at the border for hours. Taxi and bus services have been reduced or even halted. Also seen a lot of Chilean military trucks sending reinforcements to the border in case these problems spill over to Chile. Tacna airport has might have issues and there are riots in Ilo and Tacna from what I've heard. APEC are also holding a summit in Peru. Not sure of the impact of that, but increases in security might slow you down. If you're in Arica, drop me a line. Take care. |
If you get word of nationwide protests and blockades I would sit tight for a couple days until it blows over.
I busted around 20 blockades complete with pissed off mobs in the North and it was not fun. Also, be on your toes for crooked cops upon entering Lima and in the desert to the North of Lima. |
cold chills
I was in the area of Tacna on Oct. 19th and everything seemed fine. Also in Chile. I'm glad I didn't spend a lot more time in Cusco and Puno before heading back to B.A. Hopefully things will resume the peaceful nature that I saw.
