Safety and Bureaucracy in Sudan and Egypt

Hey guys,

I am currently thinking about driving my Kawasaki Versys 650 from Zambia to Europe through Kenya/Ethiopia/Sudan/Egypt and then either by boat to Italy or maybe further West through Libya to Tunisia and then by boat to Europe. However, I wonder whether it is currently possible to travel through Sudan considering the safety situation and bureaucracy (visa, travel permit). I also heard that Egypt won't allow you to import your bike without paying a 400% import tax or something like that.

That's why I wanted to ask whether somebody has recently traveled NE Africa or has information about whether one can travel through there. I have a German passport, if that makes any difference. Thanks a lot for your information!

Hi PeterU, welcome to the HUBB. There are hundreds of posts related to this topic, and somehow an overall fatigue by HUBBers to provide repeatedly the same information. Please do take the necessary time to search past threads.

In short, it is feasible, costly both financially and cost-wise. Bureaucracy in Egypt is particularly is painful to deal with but riding the country WAS absolutely worth it prior to security issues. However nowadays riding Sinaï is not simple, same for the Western oasis ring. This is the forum where you'll get all the support you need from others to plan and realize your trip. Safe travel.

For this you will need a carnet de passage, here is where you look for information about that.
