Road through south Ossetia passable now?
Hello everybody,
Is there any latest information on the road from Gori to Tsageri by Oni in South Ossetia? Is it open? Is it safe? Thankyou |
Still not possible to cross from Georgia into South Ossetia unless it has changed since last August.
I recommend a visit to Oni (and further north). Ghebi: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z...%2520Ghebi.JPG EO |
Thanks for the feedback. Got information from a resident of Gori as well today. The road is supposed to be blocked between Gori and Tsinvali. We would be sent back there by () military. So we cannot reach Oni unless we go through the tunnel like mentioned in this thread before. Unfortumately we do not have enough time.
So it looks like the way to get to Tskaltubo from Tiblisi will be the main road then; E30. Then from there we'll head out to Batumi and take the ferry to Odessa. If anyone likes to recomment a specific route between Tblisi and Batumi, look foreward to hear it. |

With a little time, I would plan to visit either Svaneti or Racha (the region north of Oni) to see some real mountain scenery. Otherwise, the main road through Gori and Kutaisi is pretty miserable as the traffic can be apalling; in my experience Georgia has the worst driving standards in the Former USSR. There is also little in the way of scenery along the road itself, though Kutaisi is a nice place to visit. If you are really just transiting through Georgia, I would recommend a more southerly route from Tbilisi via Manglisi, Tsalka (Greek town), Akhalkalaki (Varzia is nearby) and Akhalstikhe, then down to Batumi. The road is mostly very good, the scenery is beautiful high rolling grasslands dotte with lakes, much more like the highlands of Armenia than other parts of Georgia, and there are indeed many Armenian towns here. OK that sounds interresting.
We'll check those out. Thanks a lot! |
Some of us intent to buy motorcycle insurance at the border of Georgia. We thought that was possible? Look forward hearing from you again.
