Stuck in Nigeria
I am currently travelling from UK to South Africa. We had planned to cross over into East Africa going Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia.
We have all the visas except Sudan and the embassy here are not issuing stating that there is trouble at the border. Can anyone advise how to proceed. We seem to have a choice between the following: 1. Go to Chad and try to get visa 2. Head South through Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Angola, Namibia 3. Ship from somewhere Any ideas? Cheers, Simon http://overland.anglings.com |
You are now in Nigeria? You can try the following: Get visa for Cameroon (in Abuja). In Douala, Cameroon, get visa for Gabon and Republic of Congo (Brazzaville). Continue south to Libreville, Gabon. Get visa for Angola. Continue south via Lambarene to Dolisie (Congo). There you can put bike and yourself on the daily train to Point Noir. Cross border into Cabinda, Angola. Find ship to Luanda, or any other place in Angola (There is at least one a week). Continue south via Lubango to Namibia, and you're almost in SA.
Should you have troubles along the way, you can fly (with bike) to Joburg from Douala, or Libreville. You can ship from Accra, but I have no personal experience about this. Incidentally, I did the trip as described in the fall of 2000. Check the "book" section of horizonsunlimited for my book about this trip. Enjoy. It's fun. You'll meet the nicest people along the way. Let us know what you decide. |
Im currently in Cameroun en going for option 2). Overland all the way, as suggested going for the Angola visa in Libreville. Even if that might not work out, Pointe-Noire, Brazza and Kibshasa also have angolan embassies.
At the moment there are quite a few vehicles -know 6-, bikes and 4*4, doing the route so its possible for sure.... Drop me a email in a few weeks for some more info, as you like... Grtz Meindert |
I'm now in the North of Cameroon - much has happened since my last post and I'm now travelling alone. Will be in Limbe/Douala on Thursday, getting visas and will then be heading South _ probably through (or around by ship) Angola. If anyone else is in the area and would like a travel partner or can offer any advice email me.
