Tunisia into Algeria
Has anyone recently travelled from Tunisia into Algreia and if so did they experience any problems, as later this year myself and a group of friends are travelling from England to Sicily and are thinking of going over to Tunisia and travelling through Tunisia and Algeria to Oran and then crossing back to France.

Not really worth the bother Tony.

I read most of your site and probably will buy one of your books pretty soon, but I am not sure if I understand your post. Are you saying it is not worth the bother going to Algeria or posting the question? :confused1: My girlfriend and I are planning to do Genoa-Tunis-Tam and back on :scooter: somewhere at the end of this year and are also looking for some recent experiences. So, anyone? |
I meant that Tony would have found that as an add on excursion rather than a commitment it would not be worth the hassle because of the Algeria escort etc regs; particularly when crossing from Tunisia. West side out of Oran you may get away with it for a bit (see: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...anrasset-41270) but at In Salah or above they will expect an escort.
Most new people are not aware of these regs. I hope I would never tell someone their question is not worth posting! Ch |

I go about twice a year. You're a target, but only to a few hundred nutters up north who have the whole country against them. Pakistan is much more risky.
Plenty of recent info on the HU Sahara forum or look here: Sahara Overland ~ Algeria visa and travel information Everyone goes there, but for a first trip Morocco may be a better intro. Down south there's a lot more short range to do than most realise - no need for giant tanks or even camping gear. Got a new book out for there next month. The big problem with Alg is you need an escort in a car which costs €100/day or so, let alone the ferries. In a 4x4 its not so bad but riding a bike it kind of spoils the fun unless you make it work for you by getting them to carry your bags and even cook for you. The riding is of course brilliant, see the clip below. Ch YouTube - Desert Biking in the Sahara |

As far as Morocco goes: I know it must be nice, but it's a pretty long drive down from Amsterdam to the south of Morocco. I would prefer to ride 1200 k, take a Ferry in Genoa and then ride on African soil most of the way. It is to be more of an adventure trip than a hardcore offroading trip. And (this will come back to haunt me) we like to go a bit more off the beaten track.. Anyway, this looks to be heading off topic rapidly. |
