Use a Satellite phone in India and get arrested!
Andy Pog, a UK citizen traveling the world in a school bus powered by biodiesel was arrested this week for using a satellite phone in India. If you are carrying a satellite phone into India you must get special permission. Use can be tracked if you use an Indian gateway or portal. Sentences can be as long as four years, it is considered a terrorism offense.

I've just heard that Andy Pag (who I know well) has been released on bail, which beats 6 months on remand.
India changed the rules on sat phones after Mumbai attack but forgot to tell anyone - and maybe Andy did not declare the satphone at the border (as one often does). They tracked his twitterings for 2 weeks before nabbing him in Pushkar. Being the 'same model' as the Mumbai guys added up to Andy having the 'same motives' to the not-so-bright cops, but a judge saw sense so all a storm in a tea cup. A good warning though: declare a sat or just use for emergency. Local SIM mobiles work all over non-Hims India I imagine and are much cheaper. Chris S |
I thought he would talk his way out of it
YouTube - Andy and Esther get pulled over by Nigerias Road Safety Cops anyway, hope it ends well for him. |

According to his blog Two Tonnes he's released but of course hasn't been compensated.
Such idiotic treatment by the cops/government is not surprising for India, unfortunately. -A |
