Violence in Mexican Prisons
Drug cartel battle kills 49 in northeastern Mexican prison | Reuters
Two Years Inside a Mexican Prison - The Atlantic The articles are from Reuters and The Atlantic, both are respected for accuracy of their reporting. While working for the International Red Cross, I visited and interviewed "foreigners" held in Mexican prisons, some were charged because of traffic accidents, irregular documents, or invalid auto insurance. I am once again in Mexico and I read the the Mexican press daily, I have noted a tremendous increase in prison violence. This is not a scare tactic, it is real. Over landers should obey all Mexican laws and pay careful attention to diplomatic and law enforcement warnings. xfiltrate |
And despite these stories, there are still idiot overlanders driving around without mandatory liability insurance and without the "legals" option and with fake vehicle papers and expired or invalid registrations back home.

Were you with ICRC? I spent many years working for ICRC in African conflicts (I was an Air Ops manager and later an aircraft pilot). Send me a PM, maybe we have some common friends. As for the topic you raised - I really don't recommend visiting Mexican prisons when touring. It's worth spending a little more to stay in a hostel or even a good 5 star hotel while enroute. :smartass: I have heard, though, that Swiss prisons are supposedly pretty good. Michael |
