carnet de passage en douane
Hi everyone,
does anyone know if we can get a carnet de passage en douane elsewhere from our original country ? Or it is impossible. Is there any advantages doing it elsewhere ? i leave in Canada and i was considering Europe to do that before going to South Africa. Why ? Well, I'm planning to travel 2 years and South Africa is just a part of the plan. So i want to do it when the bikes will be in Europe not before unless it is not possible. Thank you for any feedback on that topic. |
If you are going down the West coast of Africa, you don't need a Carnet.
You may find a border offical asking for one (ex. Entering Togo). But the reason the border offical ask for one is that he is too lazy to fill up the temporary import permit. If asked just say that you don't have any. Keep insisting and you will get a TIP. Patrick |
Info in the "Getting Ready" section of this forum seems to be a bit out of date as the Carnet situation keeps changing.
At one stage it was possible for anyone to get carnets from ADAC Germany, but then they international organisation clamped down so you could only get a carnet from an issuer authorised for your country of registration. However, I thought(??) that had been again relaxed or even overturned by a court ruling, but I think ADAC got sick of the hassles and stopped issuing them for just anyone. Dan Grec has posts on several forums tracing his progress around Africa without being forced into getting a carnet and expects to succeed except for maybe Europe. Trouble is you still need one to ship into South Africa. Boomerang - http://www.atacarnet.com/ is your nominated issuer |
what about if you ride there ( South Africa ) instead of shipping ???

Pretty sure that Dan's posts suggested it is only if you ship it in and land entry was OK.
