Cost - uk to Australia
 

Hi there,

I am planing a trip on a yamaha ttr250 to take up to 9 months to travel to Australia and ship the bike back. If anyone has done a similar trip can they advise on rough costs. I have been told £10,000 should be enough, is this a rough figure that can be worked too?

I understand there are a number of variables, im just after a bit of a wooley figure.

Rough figuring ? Use the cost you have at home. Some places will be cheaper, others more expensive. Depends on your route. But for a rough start use your home costs.

9 months
food ? what per day .. figure it is going to be about the same as staying at home .. plus? figure costs per day * no of days

accommodation .. 5 star or cheap? figure costs per day * no of days


The bike
17,000 km .. so
fuel at the home costs *17,000km / fuel economy

2 sets of tyres (just to be certain)
1 chain + sprocket set
oil + filter changes

Shipping
Look on the HU shipping page to get ideas for the bike costs.
A quick check suggests minimum ~1,200 ukp for air and about half that for sea (6 weeks delivery). Of course it will be more when you come to do it :(

Look at the aeroplane websites for cost of shipping/flying yourself place to place.

Tourism
You should visit the sites along the way .. some will charge entrance fees ..
Say $70 per week ?
Letters/post cards/web/phone ... ? $ per week * number of weeks

do you need a carnet on your route? Add that.

I'm planning a similar trip and including guide through China (with a group) and flight from Nepal to Malaysia (due to Thailand lock down) £10k should be enough. I'm camping some, and splurging some but planning on around £8k with room to spare.

Shipping the bike back will be one of your biggest expenses I reckon.

I know it's not experience, but I've been planning for a year now. Hopefully I'm close.

For 270 days riding, the wooley figure is close to 15.000 UKP IMO.
15.000 diveded by 270 = 55 ukp
10.000 diveded by 270 = 37. ukp

I'll take a look through the guidence you've given and work out a figure myself, however i really am just at the concept stage so im sure I'll overlook a few things! If i have to save more or cut the length then so be it :)

2015 UK to Thailand in 9 months, camping in Europe and some of Central Asia and staying in lower cost guest houses the rest of the time, eating local food and a beer or two on a night, 2 sets of tyres (1 set shipped to Kathmandu),and paid guides through China and Myanmar came in at ~£11,000.

I think I could have done it for less, get rid of the beers or the guest houses, but the pound isn't as strong now which doesn't help your cause.

You can definitely do it on £10,000, you just have to watch what you spend. I met cyclists on 10euro/day budget and they were having a great time.

Then what about Thailand to OZ ?

Dan's wanting to do it in 9 months, my trip was 9 months, so in that regard they're comparable.

It gives him an idea of known spending on a recent trip that shares a similar route.

Yes, I can see that but you only travelled to Thailand Dan needs to Travel to Oz I am sure it's not free from Thailand to Oz that's my point.
And back in 2015, Thailand was Transit free NOW it's not?

Now now you two stop flirting haha! I understand where you both are coming from one view is its a comparable length of time and the other is focused on the distance, both offer decent advice so thanks for your help!

I'm going to print off an a1 euro-asia map and plot out fees for entering each country etc :)

I appreciate your help, I'll reconsider my budget on both distance and time.

This is pretty exciting!

The 3 factors that change cost;

Time. Food and accommodation cost as a start, add visits to tourist sights on top of that.

Distance. Fuel, tyres, oil.

Route Visas, carnet, shipping. The relative costs of each location will also effect the above 2 costs as well, but for a rough calculation .. ignore it at the start.

Allow that things will change as you travel - things close/open, costs go up and down, and exchange rates vary. 20% might be a good buffer.

Most people start their trip living 'well', they become more frugal towards the end of their trip as the money runs out, but still happy. :mchappy:

When it comes to pricing up entering countries, carivanistan (not sure if I'm breaking any rules referencing another site on here, apologies if I am) is a font of up to date knowledge for central Asia.

That' s around us$ 45 per day.

Just for daily food, accomodation, gas?
Don't forget the hidden costs at home, insurance, rent, restart your life...
and visa, cdp(oz),shipping asia-oz, transport back, emergencies...and, and, and...

Have you done any trips on the bike, do you know how much YOU needed?
Costs for gas and food will not vary al lot, in some countries you eat in restaurants an in others you have to cook yourself.
Accomodation is where the costs differ; wild camping, campground, backpacker, hotel?

How much one needs is very individual, lowering one's costs is an art, needs training, usualy the longer one is on the road the lower the costs become.

Have fun planning and eventually on the road.
