Costa Rica to Panama via Sixaola
 

Has any one any information on the Sixaola Costa Rica to Panama border crossing? We are in CR now and would like to visit the Caribbean coast and cross into Panama there. Any info on road conditions especially from Sixoala to Almirante Panama would be very helpful. We are crossing to Columbia June 4th on the Staleratte. Safe travels to all.

I've done all three of the Panama- Costa Rica border crossings with a motorbike in the last twelve months. The Sixaola crossing I did in the Panama to CR direction and it was the quickest and easiest of the three. Very little traffic uses it. I don't remember anything special about the roads either side of the border, they were all sealed and only moderately bumpy, pot holed. I do remember the part in Panama where you parallel the Caribbean coast was fairly boring but the bit where you cross from the Pacific to Caribbean side was absolutely lovely riding. Also once in CR the roads up the Caribbean side were fine.

My only words of advice: if you hear that banana workers are striking and have blocked the border bridge, take it seriously. Things like this can get dangerous in a hurry, and there is no practical alternative without retracing your ride for hundreds of kilometers.

That's the voice of experience. On the other hand, the mountainous part of the ride one the Panama side is nice, as is almost anything you might do on the Costa Rica side.
