Help for Thelma-R80GS
Thelma - my trusty R80GS, is in a bad way. She carried me and friends from UK to Australia and then home through Africa (2 1/2 years). I now desperately need to rebuild her in readiness for tackling the Americas. I'm not very mechanically-minded, but have been a quick learner on this trip. If anyone can give any help or advice it would be much appreciated, especially if I could be pointed in the right direction for a replacement engine. Does anyone have any ideas? Thelma is in Birmingham at a friend's garage, I'm in Cornwall.

Hi Tiffany
The main UK BMW breakers that I have used are: http://www.motorworks.co.uk/ http://www.motobins.co.uk/ http://www.james-sherlock.co.uk/ http://www.bracken.co.uk/ They may be able to help with secondhand engines. Alternatively, if you want some advice on rebuilding your engine, I have read good reports about the "boxer man" Phil Hawksley, who's based somewehere in Leicester: http://www.boxerman.co.uk/ I haven't used him for anything myself though. Hope this helps ------------------ Sean |
if you havent had much success with Thelma yet dont hesitate to get in touch, can rebuild boxers and advise on maintenance tasks. Could also collect and deliver the bike if this is appropriate...
Unless there is some major engine damage Thelma could be refurbished completely,, second hand engines are a little bit of a lottery most will be ex-police or despatch motors sold with 7 or so days warranty so it's got to be done quick if you take this option! send an "e" if this is a viable option ok-- Good Luck |
