The expensive/safe solution is to call your local solicitors office (the smaller the better for this sort of thing). They'll charge to open all the **** the bank and HMRC sends you, but it's 100% legal and safe, you will not be "without a fixed abode". The cost would probably only be justified if have something more complex than a cash card account and a couple of premium bonds, but for the cost of the phone call I'd ask. Tell them you want to make a will too, it'll improve the price!

Although I have a flat and bank account in the UK i have not lived there for years. I use a friends address and they put my accumulated mail in a big envelope every three months and send it on to me. I have paperless bank statements etc. I know when my new credit/debit card is arriving so am careful to be somewhere with a good postal service during that time or alternatively use DHL/Fed Ex which isn't too expensive for up to a kilo. I haven't told the bank I'm away - the less they know the better.
