How soon to travel after surgery
Hello
After planning, and daydreaming, for the past few months, I am due to leave on a long-ish trip throuh North Africa. Unfortunately, about 10 days ago I had surgery to remove an abscess from my buttock. Still a little painful to sit down, and after daily dressings, the wound is 'almost' healed. Really want to go on this trip, but am concerned that it might be too difficult. The nurses all say NO, but I am hoping that there might be someone on this board who has had a similar operation, and might be able to assure me that I'll be able to sit on my bike for several thousand kms. Anybody had a similar operation and happily got back on their bike after a couple of weeks?? Thanks (and hoping). |
Hi Sorebutt
A couple of years ago I had a girl on my pillion seat on a CH-UK-CH trip with a simillar problem. Hospital in UK and after only few days rest clenched her teeth on the way back home. She was a brave girl but the result was back to hospital and she couldn't even walk for weeks... Listen to your body (or in this case to your buttock ;-) and go for a test ride. If you still feel comfortable after a few hundred km you should be ok. Don't forgett that even a minor injury can be a serious problem in Africa. Enjoy your trip & safe rides! Kudi |
Hi
You will run a high risk of getting your wound infected which may be far worse than before. Remember the hospital care in Northern Africa does not compare with the UK so if you do fall ill you may be in unpleasant surroundings. Also sitting for long periods on it, I would imagine will be painful and no doubt that you will end up sweating, will increase you chances of getting it infected. I would personally wait until it has healed and then do your trip which you'll enjoy far more. Cheers Julio |
my advice---don't attempt it ---unless butt is completely healed and you can ride a couple of hundred km without problems. any thing less, and you would be asking for trouble. no charge.
