Magazine Thread
Don't see this anywhere else on HU--
What magazines do you read? (Both mc and general travel) And let's include all y'all all over the world, too--What are the rags to read in Oz/NZ, across Asia, the Continent, up and down Africa, the Subcontinent, and Las Americas? |
magazines
Why do you want to know that ?
|
Two reasons:
1. I've been riding for a while (20 years), but only recently started reading more magazines. However, most mags I've found are full of bike reviews and info about expensive merchandise, while I'm more interested in reading things along the lines of the narratives included in the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook, and some of the books mentioned in the book thread. I like Dan Walsh's stuff, but wish there was more out there to read. And the tips and discussions here on HU are more the sort of thing I like to read and think about than the lastest GSXR1Blade... 2. In the interest of full disclosure, I've started writing a bit myself and would like to find the publications that are more inline with HU folks. I don't want to get rich and famous or anything, but I'm wondering if there are some other magazines out there that are more the kind of thing I'd like to read (and potentially write). I enjoy Bike more than most, but there's still a hunger for more/different stuff. I suppose I should plug Adventure Motorcycle (formerly Dual Sport News) which is little, but has a lot of heart and runs my column. It's out of California. So, again, what magazines do y'all like? Motorcycle voyager (deceased)
I first heard of HU through Motorcycle Voyager magazine here in the UK, which was good with more emphasis on the "voyager" than on the "Motorcycle" bit of the title. Sadly it's no use to you as the magazine is no more (I was one of the lucky ones as my subscription had only one issue left when they stopped publishing, others are owed a full year or more). Before that I read Motorcycle Sport for many years, but it changed to just another porn mag (pictures of bikes for children who wanted one but couldn't have one, same as the other sort really) about the same time it changed its name to Motorcycle Sort & Leisure IMHO.
I fear the fate of MV is a symptom of the market for magazines that are not just biker porn for wannabes; there isn't enough of a market to support the production costs. The question is, are we all too busy spending our money on travel to buy a magazine, or does HU satisfy our every need, so we don't need to pay for a magazine? I do prefer to read a magazine in the bath - dropping the laptop would be expensive! |
Well, I don't know if it usefull for you but here is my list;
I have a subscription on: - The Dutch magazine ProMotor, a general bikemagazine with many articles about touring. - As a member of the GWRRA I get "WingWorld" magazine every month, about touring on GoldWings. (GWRRA is from the US) - "Chip Foto Video Digital" a Dutch photography magazine. I often buy: - The Belgian magazine "Motoren & Toerisme". A magazine about touring. - BigTwin, a magazine about Harleys and Choppers and things like that. - "zoom.nl" a Dutch photography magazine. I sometimes (about once a year) buy: - The American magazine Easyriders about Harleys and choppers. - The Belgium magazine "Custom Motorrijder" about customs and choppers |
I can recommend the Australian "Trailbike and Adventure Magazine" - TBAM for short - it's bi-monthly and more enduro focused, but plenty of travel, bike prep, equipment info.
May be hard to find outside od Aus/NZ but I'm sure they do overseas subs. H |
