Range / Fuel Capacity
In Australia I have seldom needed more than the 360km I can squeeze out of the standard tank on my R1100GS. In Africa I had 3 times this range and even then it was barely adequate on a couple of occasions.
Folks who have ridden S.America, Alaska, and/or former USSR: what are your opinions on the minimum range required? |
For South America and Alaska, you shouldn't have any problem, there is plenty of fuel available. There are some areas of course where you will want to be sure you are full up before you head out, but they should be obvious.
Russia I can't say, haven't been there, but haven't heard any reports of problems, and there have been a number of people through recently. You can always buy or scrounge a plastic jug when needed and strap it on, transferring to the main tank as soon as possible, so you don't carry it any further than necessary. ------------------ Grant Johnson Share the Dream! at: www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
Someone I know drove across the Russian Federation.
Finding gas wasn't a problem. Finding gas with any octane rating was. He drove a 1991 R100 GS and ended up with a stripped spark plug after removing one of the spark plugs on a routine check. The end of the spark plug probably melted slightly. Take spare spark plugs and bring a 35 mm container of high temp anti-seize compound. Or you could always go out and buy the new R1150 GS Adventurer. It has a low octane coding plug that you can switch for low octane fuel. ------------------ Alex Alex's BMW Motorcycle & Global Touring Page http://www.ott.igs.net/~ace |
KTM has a low-octane CDI-unit available, witch can be fitted near the normal one.
Just change a plug when you need it, and that's it. Freek (Netherlands ) |
I'd appreciate advice on the fuel capacity I'll need for overlanding UK - India. I ride a 1150 GS and am not too keen on slapping on a 42 l Touratech conversion or similar. Was hopping to get by on my 23 L tank and either buying a Tesch pannier with fuel reserve or just taking a jerry can with me
thanks ------------------ George |
Hi George,
23 L should be enaugh to make it as far as I have heared. Maarten |
