Round the World with a Dog ?
I'm sure it's been done, and I'm contemplating on doing it with my dog and a sidecar rig...that, or go without the dog by myself.
Anyone have any good info, trip reports, etc. about going round the world with a dog ? He is a full size shepherd mix, not a small dog. If it's going to be too much of a hassle, I'll go without him....but, it could make for quite an adventure also....have to really think this through before doing it. Either way, I plan on going round the world soon. Thanks, |
There are quarantine regulations regarding dogs .. countries that don't have rabies don't want your dog bringing it in.
Australia has very strict regs for animals cumming in... I think Britain does too. -------------------- Let say you bring the dog to Australia - passing the quarantine things there.. then travel on .. and get to Britain .. you now have to go through the same procedure to get in .. because you have been to rabies infested countries after leaving Australia.. The time delay is ? at least a few weeks. About 10 days quarantine .. about a minimum of $aud1,700 ... http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-d...ne-faciltities --------------------------------------------- Also in Australia they cannot be brought into some National Parks ... further restricting your activities. Some hotels won't let you have a dog either.. You'll be more flexible without the dog and cheaper too. And you won't have to find food and water for the dog either ... .. sorry. |
Interesting topic.. I just booked my ticket to Mongolia and want to travel West from there. I wanted a dog back home but didn't happen due to work/house/wife etc. I thought off getting a dog in Ulaanbaatar and take it home.. not a street dog.. just a cute pup (old enough to separate from mom) and camp with it. The borders from mongolia to Europe trouble me though.

Met a German couple at Doug's motocamp in Bulgaria last year they were travelling around with 4 dogs on a KTM outfit!
Checked out Cari Jiang's facebook I said to my dog lover wife look at this amazing guy travelling round the world with his dog she looked at a few pictures and said, I think you mean that's an amazing dog :clap: ! good luck Rad |
I doubt the UK will be on your list of countries to visit if you're travelling with a dog. It used to be that no dog got in without spending six months (iirc) in rabies quarantine and even though its shortened somewhat in recent EU times there's now a whole load of microchipping and vaccinations etc to go through.

it depends in what country will u bring ur dog. in some countries they dont allow animals on board. u dont want to leave ur dog in the middle of the trip, do u?

Recently a rock star of some sort or the other brought a couple of dogs into Australia on his private jet and was sprung. Two options - have the dogs seized and killed or load them back on his jet and fly them home.

Regarding importing a dog into Europe and the UK:
I lived in Brazil for a while. We adopted a dog there and brought it back to the UK at the end of 2012. No quarantine. The rules for the UK are identical than for the rest of Europe since January 2012 (thanks to European union!) with one addition, and few things you must know. For Europe and UK: the dog must have its international pet passport. The rules are very clear and you can investigate the details online. A very important point regarding the UK only: you cannot fly with you pet as “extra hand luggage” (i.e. normal plane) to the UK. It has to come via a shipping company. Costs a lot. But you CAN fly on any plane to any European country with your pet as “hand luggage” . The dog has to be in a Pet box and is placed in a special part of the plane. Usually space for about 2 or more pets per plane. Then you pick it up at the “odd shape luggage” area. Our dog flew from Rio to Paris on the same plane than my husband, with Air France, as "excess luggage", and from there my husband drove to the UK via the Shuttle (Eurostar Paris to London passenger trains do not accept pets). There was no problem at all at the UK border and its “Brazilian Issued international Pet Passport “ was accepted. Cost on plane is as “Extra luggage”. I wasn't much. For the UK, in addition, you have to get records by a vet that the dog has been given worming tablets/treatment at least 5 days max and 24 hour minimum before entry into the UK.. We often use the shuttle and it is easy. The dog has gone to France, Spain and various place within Schengen Europe without any problem or even any check other than in and out of the UK. So all in all, if you are from the US I presume your dog has all vaccinations, microchipped etc… if not it is easy to do and obtain an international Pet Passport. It might take few months with vaccinations, blood analysis etc… Good luck! |
Dogs are allowed straight into the UK with an international passport. No problems. I love your plan. Don't worry about the problems of travelling with the dog. Just think of the doors it will open and the companionship!
