Smart Phone app
A while ago I came across a smart-phone app which allowed one to point the smart-phone's camera onto any sign, i.e. cyrillic writing, and the app translated this sign into English (or to whatever other language it was set).
I have lost the apps name ... doh Anybody knows about this?? Would suit me fine when soon travelling in Siberia. Thx |
In both of my portable devices, a Windows Phone and an Android tablet the Translation original apps have that function.

Google translate does this. Apparently it's more tricky when it needs to be done offline.

Word Lens is what you are looking for, I think.
Quest Visual – Google Quest Visual Seems that Google bought them out. Not sure if it works offline now that it is part of Google Translate. |
Thanks guys, Google translate it is! :-)
Now i'd better make sure that I have a SIM when in Russia - any suggestions for that? |
You can use it offline apparantly so no need for a local sim although they're always usefull if you can get one cheap if you are going to get to know the locals. here is a video of the app in action , looks seriously usefull. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zKU7jDA2nc
