Spearguns & Motorcycles
Anyone ever strapped a speargun (1.1m long) to there motorcycle before?
If so, how? Planning on getting a 650 cc bike, and cruising up africa's coastline with it. But my speargun has to come with. |
i dont agree with em.....but
I don't agree with Spearfishing..:(. but if you must, each to their own.
First, disguise it! if it looks like a Weapon, you may get unwanted attention. a hard case may help ( OK its bulky but if it HAS to go with you then you HAVE to put up with some 'discomfort') wrap it in cloth. and use elastic straps. if you put the "Handle" on the inner side of a pannier(between pannier and bike, not inside the pannier) you should have only about 600mm sticking above the bike's pannier. Obviously remove the spear and if the "head" comes off the shaft put that in a pannier or a bag suitably wrapped or you may get a taste of what the fish feels if you have an 'off'! Martyn |
I would be very careful carring it..it could cause you more issues then it is worth. But if you must. What kind do you have? (I dont spear fish but am a diver so dont give me brand names), the reason i am asking is I know there is some very small ones (like 35cm total lenght), it maybe worth you investing in a compact one. or better yet a folding hawian sling. It would be much eaier to hide. Also this way you could put them at the bottom of your panniers, and out of the way and sight. The other reason .. is if you have a co2 one. Dont bring it.. I had a friend whose co2 one wnet bang! do to vibration and heat..

If you are planning to ride a bike with panniers, you might get away with strapping your speargun across both panniers. (My Dakar and Touratech boxes has a width of just over 1m). You could strap it to the top of the pannier, so that most of the overhang faced forward. Otherwise you might have to mount it vertically as previously mentioned.
Is it worth trading it in for one of Rob Allen's shorter models? (90 or 100cm) 10/20cm shorter might make it a lot easy to carry. baswacky. |

Its just the 110cm speargun makes shooting dolphins and whales so much easier:gunsmilie: ......only kidding. |

What type of panniers you going with you may be able to get a way with the 90 on the inside of you boxes along the up pipe to your silencer.. or the other side like a fake silencer (depending on bike) .. i have a tube there for my tent.. every one always asks me what the rocket launcher is for ... but it locks and it is good and secure... |
I have packed a spear gun with me before. Mine is a JBL and can be taken apart I was able to put the parts in in a bag on top of the seat. I will add to be careful with the barb end it always seems to get in the way. I find the space better used for things I use more.
I do agree with spearfishing much less wastefull, more selective. Freediving and hunting for your meal just feels right. Just wach out for the sharks running them off scares off the other fish. |
Thanks Zander & DLbiten
Im in the engineering game so gonna design & make my own alu panniers, I would love a pic of your 'rocket laucher' :biggrin3: . Ive seen a fake can on a BMW dakar before, and came in quite useful. Although would be a bit short for my needs. |
Get some PVC pipe. Cap one end and have a screw on the other. Place speargun inside. Strasp to bike. If you need to you can put eye bolts etc to the pvc pipe to give you something to attach it to the bike.

http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data...anniers_5_.JPG I will try and get some more for you soonish (but i just moved house so it may take a while..)... if you zoom in you can see it with the end cap open which is key locked.. I have subsequently made some changes to the bike so this will change position as well (not sure where though..) by the way here are my new homemade panniers http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data...w_boxes_1_.JPG http://www.xrv.org.uk/photopost/data...w_boxes_3_.JPG I will be scooping them out to fit tight to the bike in the new few weeks/months.. good luck with your build... |

Go for it Smarty!
As an avid spearfisherman, I understand the passion. I spearfished all through Mexico and Central America a number of years ago. You failed to mention if your speargun is Pneumatic or Rubber sling type. If it is a sling type, wood stock, you can cut the stock with an offset cut and drill three bolt holes on each side(6 total) of the offsets. Use stainless steel bolts with wing nuts to reassemble the stock when you want to use it. This will "halve" the length of the stock to make it easier to carry. The spear can be taken to a machine shop and cut, drilled, and threaded so it screws together in two pieces. It's plenty sturdy if you do it correctly. The shaft is just the vehicle to deliver the spearpoint. If you have a pneumatic gun (which I prefer) you are pretty much stuck with the length. You can modify the handle so it can be removed. The barrel will fit in a flyrod case or billard cue case(people will think you are a fly fisherman or pool shark) and reattach the handle when you need it. You picked the wrong website to bring the topic up as this is tree hugger central. Of course they will buy their fish in a "Market" and the fact that it is neatly packaged eliminates their guilt(as they munch on a carrot and cry for the life they took). They fail to realize that spearfishing is "selective". You get your dinner every day. You cook it on a beach and anyone who is hungry can share. Some good cane juice, beer, music and you got a party. I had many good "Luau's" in C.A. compliments of my speargun. The locals "take over". Bring food, wrap and bake the fish in palm leaves. It's great! Wish I was making the trip. Good fishing, good hunting. Best, Smitty
