Wales: A few questions I need answering
Hey all, setting off to Wales on Thursday, Anglesey to be exact, and need a bit of quick help.
As a 125cc riding Provisional License holder who wears L plates (not me, the bike) do I need to put D plates on when I cross the border? And am I allowed to ride a duel carriageway? This is basic knowledge that I should know, but the law does not seem content with making rules that are consistent, and feels the need to change them from day to day. On top of that, the DSA website was about as useful as a 10 ft salmon appearing on my doorstep dancing in a top hat with a cane to "Chicago"!! Any advise, thanks. |
I don't even know what a D plate is so I can't help you there. I think the only restriction is motorways. The A55 is a dualcarriage so that should be ok. What route are you using to get there?
I know Angelsey quite well. If you approach on the A5 head for Beaumaris and you will go over the suspension bridge. Go right for Beaumaris castle or left for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch. |
Yeah I was thinking D plates were only worn for the people of Wales. Was concerned about the 55 but I seem to recall that if a DC is closed to L platers there is usually sufficient signage along the way.
I do plan to cross the bridge to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (didn't copy and paste that btw:smartass:) and also plan to go to the crazy town of Portmerrion. Is it any good? Oh, and wheres the best place to drink? |
I seem to recall that the road down to Portmerrion is quite good fun, very twisty.

Hi,
You dont need D plates in Wales, your L plates are fine. The same driving restrictions apply to L platers as anywhere else in the UK. Wales is still part of the UK and is not 'abroad' although you may think you are somewhere on another planet when you see the road signs..:thumbup1: So basically, treat all the roads and driving regs the same as England and have a great time. Portmeirion is fun, a little bit of Italy in wales in the UK. You are in for asome lovely scenery, hope the weather keeps good for you. Cheers Lee |
Thanks lee. Its been so long since I drove anything but duel c.ways, quite easy to forget what the laws are.
