Somebody told me it had turpentine in it. Never smelt any in it myself.

I can attest to the fact that WD40 if used excessively will coat HT leads with a grease like substance and make a hell of a mess.
A friend had an old car and lived by the sea [very damp],she had watched someone use wd40 to get it started one morning .So every morning she would spray the stuff over her engine and distributor cap and HT leads after while the car wouldn't go at all .Everything was coated in a grey white shitty mess and sparks were jumping everywhere when you tried to get it started .

For mucky points and HT leads electrical contact cleaner is better and for drying out electrics methylated spirits [ methyl hydrate] is best . It works good in your petrol tank if you have accidentally contaminated your fuel with water .
