West Africa: how many overlanders?
Hi,
I was just wondering how many people are actually taking the Western route down at the moment (or vice versa). Any calculated guesses? Happy travels |
oh god thats a tough one.
so when i travelled that way i came across 1 overlanding bus, 4 motorcycles 1 4x4. so i guess if you probably triple or quadruple that you might have a rough guess of how many are getting around. maybe |
You mean all the way, through Nigeria to South Africa?
A lot of Frenchies and so forth just go to West Africa for winter etc. |

I mean overlanders who are actually on the road all the way north to south (or v.v.), not in a year but at any moment. I've heard people saying it must be "hundreds", and others thinking it's far less. Especially those taking the West Coast route. Just out of curiosity. Happy travels |
There are travellers who don't blog or post online, or who do it in languages that our google searches might not flag up...
When I crossed from Cameroon to Gabon I had a drink with the Cameroonian guys, got chatting and checked their 'aliens' log book. Seemed to be about one 'group' per week - the 'group' might be a solo biker or 4 vehicles in a convoy. They said once or twice a week on average - some months only one or two because of the rains. I'd say about 95% of travellers use that border crossing rather than going directly to Congo or through Equatorial G? In the last few years the Angolan visa has probably reduced numbers a little. Some ship from Ghana as well... Whatever, we are a select bunch of wonderful people ;-p |
West Africa: How many overlanders ?
Hi,
I was wondering the same thing. I am in Niamey having come from Mauritania, Mali, Burkina, Niger and I have not seen one overlander yet. I am trying to get to Cape Town. Any info on Angola visas recently ? |
I have just finished the west - and have collect all people (i found) who did/do the west route in 2012 (and are writing a blog) on my blog @ Trans-Africa: Gerade Unterwegs...
We meet just 2 times overlanders on the way. The SleepingCamel in Bamoko was an "overland free zone" bevore we arrive. In the Hippocamp in Brazzaville (Congo) there was 2 cars stranded, because they have to sent their passports home in their homecountry for collecting the visas downwards. You may find all informations you need in my blog i guess. There are not so many on the way like some years ago - but there are still overlanders (not many of them have a blog i guess) We had an amazing trip :mchappy: Surfy |
When i traveled the west coast i hardly met any overlanders. Moast of them travel the east coast:
