Hey..

If all goes well, I should be leaving the UK in Mid April with a similar plan.

I've got about three months and want to do a similar route. Like you I have practically no plan yet haha.

But I'll be terminating in Vlad or Magadan and getting the train back. Probably.

I travelled all over South America on an XT600E. It's a solid bike but I prefer my XR650L now. Better suspension, bit more power etc.

Lowrider1263 9 Oct 2015 17:26

Your right there ted, the xr great bike some nice bits on much more of a complete bike with the big tank on and very reliable.
I love the 600 tenere it's a thing I had with them a long time age, it's the perfect bike for what I want to do,
I bought a terra 650 last year thinking I was doing this trip but my wife lost the baby, it was a sad time, anyway the husky terra was a dog so I sold it,
I would be up for a meet up at some point to talk about plans and stuff if anyone else would like to meet up that would be splendid

If you're on the Island

If your travels have you visiting Vancouver Island, email me ahead and I can show you the Island.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks... I was in Vancouver in 2012 before heading up to the Yukon on a canoe trip. Love Vancouver :)

Just been on the dfds web to book the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam before the prices start to escalate, last year they went from £130 with bike to £210 after Xmas, no going back now, can't waiting till Feb to start getting visas sorted.
The bike coming along great, most of the it's are back from powder coaters, I've started putting it together, I've decided to keep with everything mechanical as standard as I want to keep with the original bike, the only thing that I've put on different is the front mudguard as I wanted something stronger to carry two inner tub bags

Thanks ted, I'll be down at the nec on the Sunday if you can make it we'll have a coffee m8 and a chat,
I love the tenere, I've got five and a xt500, I went out to buy this 1984-5 model as its got the 30ltr tank giving me over 500 km or 350 mile range, I've rebuilt two engines, I'll be running both engines in, March time when the big freeze ends hopefully,

I too, am planning to ride either to Magadan or Vladivostok in 2016. I'm hoping to enter Russia from Georgia at the Verkhiny Lars - Darial Gap crossing - as far as I can tell, it's still open.

I'd be interested in speaking with anyone doing a similar route.

I'm thinking the xt 600 for the job with the bigger plastic tank,

hello folks . I am back in riding on big scale, dont know exactly why ah ah ??
My real big stuff was in 80' with a XT 500 from ORAN to Dar es Salaam through deserts , west, central and east Africa.
The rest of the time i just rode road bikes . Until i went to Morocco on pistes with a drz .
And it was not so tough but so wonderful to ride again on trails , alons at a moment , meeting people and so on .
Also old projects got back in memory like going to Vladivostok through Russia..... And I met this forum .
Lowrider i enjoy your posts . I am feeling in the same mood. :thumbup1:
TO be honest not sure I could do the trip next year .

Short time to find a bike : the DRZ could not easily carry a bigger tank than the 1MS' 15 L I have now and , if yout put more luggage would not be so efficient on trails ( pistes) , and also an air cooled will be simpler to fix ( an old DR or XT ? )

Short time to decide my wife also :funmeteryes:especially now in Europe

Not sure also I can camp and ride so long without stop ( age :helpsmilie:)

But I will follow this thread and try to make a decision soon enough .
Or maybe jsut make the european /turkish/russia beginning part
so long

How smitty
With all that's going on in Europe I'm waiting to see what's the best crossing from Georgia to Russia then ride up the railway line to the border of kazikstan, I've booked the ferry from Newcastle to Holland on the 5 th may so that's my stating point and time, I need to be in corfu for the 26th then I leave to travel across Greece, according to my plan and visa times it should take me 17 days to make it to the Mongolian border, then from that point I'm not planing a great deal as you know it's the Unknown, I know it's not a detailed plan but that's how I work, I'm trying to get over to Vancouver before the end of August.
If you want to pm me then please do so, there is two of us I'm on my 1985 tenere 600, Iain will be on his 660 tenere.

Hi Luc
Sounds like you are where I was about five years ago, just do what you are happy with and then if you are ready to do the big adventure you will just do it, I've tried to do this big adventure for a few years now and there is always something in the way so I said f--k it, I need to do it, so the ferries book and I start doing my visas in March, I must admit my partner has been very good even thou it must be very upsetting to think I'll be away for four months,
Good luck with your trip

DRZ in Tbilisi

Following this thread with some interest. I left my DRZ in Tbilisi after riding from Japan via Russia, Mongolia and a bunch of Stans across to the Caspian and the ferry to Baku. Intending to return to collect the bike in 2016 and ride back to Japan. I have a few rough routes in mind.
1, Georgia - Armenia - Iran - Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Kyrgyzstan - Kazakhstan - Russia - Mongolia - Russia and highway to Vlad for the ferry.
2, Georgia - Military Hwy to Russia - Western BAM - A yet to be decided interesting way to Magadan and then the shipping to Vlad.
3, Latch on to any interesting route others are doing.

My trusty DRZ is getting some attention in Tbilisi and will be well prepared for the return trip.
I had intended getting back to Tbilisi around late March but an flexible on dates as long as I'm back in Japan by the end of June.
