2016 Russia & Canada USA leaving from England
I've got a plan, the plan is not to have a plan, only things I need in place is visas for 2016 to enter Russia and a few other country's, I'm looking at leaving England mid June heading to Greece, from there head to Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, russia, Mongolia, Russia, like to do road of bones if that's possible the cargo boat to Vladivostok, or maybe straight to Vladivostok.
This is where I'm not to sure, organise transport from here to Canada, I can take a ferry to Korea then fly to anchorage with the bike, or have the bike shipped to Canada, depends on how long this all takes, I would be happy to share a container with others, I think I would be in Vladivostok sometime in August, from there ride the bike to New York and leave the bike there with friends fly back to England, then in 2017 come back and do the tat, or do the tat in 2016, loads to think about, I'm thinking the xt 600 for the job with the bigger plastic tank, I've got wolfman soft luggage, I've also got bmw adventure panniers that I can adapt the racks to fit the xt, I need to think this out a little bit, I'll be interested to know if anyone from the forum is planning to do this in 2016 about the same time, possibly be interested doing some of this route with me, I'm planning most of the trip across Russia will be camping, then from there I will work on things, the likely hood is I will mix it up a bit if I cross the pond. |
Hi,
Im planning to leave London at the start of June 2016, and 2 months later arrive in Vladivostok, then ship my bike to USA/Canada West coast. My time scale may dictate a different route to yours, but I'm up for planning some parts together! |
The route is just a guide things change, time scale is about spot on for Vladivostok,
I'm just in talks with air Canada, looks like it's Korea to air freight if you want to fly with the bike, that means soon as you land you are on your way after bike service of course, the other is shipping option that takes about 10 to 14 days then you fly onto Canada, Vancouver looks the best option, if you would like to discuss your plans my email is. kevingrahambutler@hotmail.co.uk Thanks Graham |
If you get to Korea. Check out Air Canada prices for the bike. If it's reasonable for your budget, you'll get a discount on your air ticket.
|
I've sent a email to air Canada last week waiting on a reply, don't think it will be the cheapest option but the fastest. It early days I'll see if I can find other options, maybe split cost with someone, or any ideas would be great

Thanks G |
I thought I would post to update on what's the plan up to now, I will attend the haggis bank, so if anyone would like to meet up there to discuss this trip that would be splendid,
The plan so far is leave the northeast Sunderland northeast mid May on a xt 600z to travel Harwich for the ferry then travel though Europe down to Greece, travel up to Bulgaria to Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Russia. I could do the road of bones but then I will need to make my way to Vladivostok to take a ferry to South Korea or I can go straight to Vladivostok. fly from Korea to Vancouver then travel down to the start of the tat. You can take a cheaper option cargo ship if you had the time so depends on how long it take to get to Vladivostok. If some one has the same sort traveling plan or part of the plan then meeting at some point to dis use options, I think camping is a big plan as most will be country, As regards off road that's going to happen any way as most will be outback with roads when appropriate. I've set aside a decent budget so I can keep my options open, I love camping so that's my first choice. |
with what's happening in Ukraine at the moment, its possible that i may go round the black sea using turkey or there's a ferry from Bulgaria to Russia or Georgia, so there's a few option open

Will be doing the same trip in 2016. Shipping my bike to Europe this September and will leave it in northern Italy to resume next Spring. My plan is the same as yours; ride to Vladivostok and ship my bike back to North America. I'll be riding with hard luggage and full camping gear. If you haven't changed plans, lets get in contact. I've started sorting routes and getting thing in place for next year, can't come round quick enough, camping is a must I love it, I will be traveling with soft luggage wolfman stuff, I'm on a 1985 xt600 tenere, the tank range is about 500 miles, it's the 30ltr tank, The route I've got on my garin so fare is taking me though Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, ferry to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Russia to Vladivostok, ferry to South Korea, then ether fly me and bike to Vancouver, or ship bike depends on how long it takes to ship bike, travel down the coast into USA to start the trans American trail. That's a rough sort of plan upto now, can anyone see any problems that I might encounter with this route apart from the South Korea bit I'll pm you ray maybe have a chat Thanks G |

I'm on a 2009 tenere 660. just getting it all rigged out with sat nav, lights, engine protection etc. I'm waiting on the sale of my house then I'm free to go with no return date. I'm based in East Yorkshire mate so would be easy to meet and discuss some plans. Ian |

I'm in Manchester, currently out of country, but want to drop things late Spring for a big trip. I thought I'd register interest, sounds like a great plan! Not sure how much commitment I can make right now due to work etc.
Also on an XT, although a XT660Z '08. |
Hi lankyrider I'm leaving may 2016 I'll be sorting my visas out early March so hopefully you should know by then what's your definite plans.
Thanks G |
Hey..
If all goes well, I should be leaving the UK in Mid April with a similar plan. I've got about three months and want to do a similar route. Like you I have practically no plan yet haha. But I'll be terminating in Vlad or Magadan and getting the train back. Probably. I travelled all over South America on an XT600E. It's a solid bike but I prefer my XR650L now. Better suspension, bit more power etc. |
Your right there ted, the xr great bike some nice bits on much more of a complete bike with the big tank on and very reliable.
I love the 600 tenere it's a thing I had with them a long time age, it's the perfect bike for what I want to do, I bought a terra 650 last year thinking I was doing this trip but my wife lost the baby, it was a sad time, anyway the husky terra was a dog so I sold it, I would be up for a meet up at some point to talk about plans and stuff if anyone else would like to meet up that would be splendid |
If you're on the Island
If your travels have you visiting Vancouver Island, email me ahead and I can show you the Island.
Enjoy your trip! |
Thanks... I was in Vancouver in 2012 before heading up to the Yukon on a canoe trip. Love Vancouver :)

Just been on the dfds web to book the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam before the prices start to escalate, last year they went from £130 with bike to £210 after Xmas, no going back now, can't waiting till Feb to start getting visas sorted.
The bike coming along great, most of the it's are back from powder coaters, I've started putting it together, I've decided to keep with everything mechanical as standard as I want to keep with the original bike, the only thing that I've put on different is the front mudguard as I wanted something stronger to carry two inner tub bags http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0n3i169h.jpg http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/...psvnxckgor.jpg http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/...psqmbdbl0s.jpg |
Looking good..
|
Thanks ted, I'll be down at the nec on the Sunday if you can make it we'll have a coffee m8 and a chat,
I love the tenere, I've got five and a xt500, I went out to buy this 1984-5 model as its got the 30ltr tank giving me over 500 km or 350 mile range, I've rebuilt two engines, I'll be running both engines in, March time when the big freeze ends hopefully, |
Me and a couple of mates booked our tickets today.
We're going to drive down just for the day. Arriving around 11am on the Sunday. |
I too, am planning to ride either to Magadan or Vladivostok in 2016. I'm hoping to enter Russia from Georgia at the Verkhiny Lars - Darial Gap crossing - as far as I can tell, it's still open.
I'd be interested in speaking with anyone doing a similar route. Smitty Facebook.com/groups/smittygonerideabout |
going to vlad through russia

My real big stuff was in 80' with a XT 500 from ORAN to Dar es Salaam through deserts , west, central and east Africa. The rest of the time i just rode road bikes . Until i went to Morocco on pistes with a drz . And it was not so tough but so wonderful to ride again on trails , alons at a moment , meeting people and so on . Also old projects got back in memory like going to Vladivostok through Russia..... And I met this forum . Lowrider i enjoy your posts . I am feeling in the same mood. :thumbup1: TO be honest not sure I could do the trip next year . Short time to find a bike : the DRZ could not easily carry a bigger tank than the 1MS' 15 L I have now and , if yout put more luggage would not be so efficient on trails ( pistes) , and also an air cooled will be simpler to fix ( an old DR or XT ? ) Short time to decide my wife also :funmeteryes:especially now in Europe Not sure also I can camp and ride so long without stop ( age :helpsmilie:) But I will follow this thread and try to make a decision soon enough . Or maybe jsut make the european /turkish/russia beginning part so long JLuc from France retired 14' from teaching |

With all that's going on in Europe I'm waiting to see what's the best crossing from Georgia to Russia then ride up the railway line to the border of kazikstan, I've booked the ferry from Newcastle to Holland on the 5 th may so that's my stating point and time, I need to be in corfu for the 26th then I leave to travel across Greece, according to my plan and visa times it should take me 17 days to make it to the Mongolian border, then from that point I'm not planing a great deal as you know it's the Unknown, I know it's not a detailed plan but that's how I work, I'm trying to get over to Vancouver before the end of August. If you want to pm me then please do so, there is two of us I'm on my 1985 tenere 600, Iain will be on his 660 tenere. |

Sounds like you are where I was about five years ago, just do what you are happy with and then if you are ready to do the big adventure you will just do it, I've tried to do this big adventure for a few years now and there is always something in the way so I said f--k it, I need to do it, so the ferries book and I start doing my visas in March, I must admit my partner has been very good even thou it must be very upsetting to think I'll be away for four months, Good luck with your trip |
DRZ in Tbilisi
Following this thread with some interest. I left my DRZ in Tbilisi after riding from Japan via Russia, Mongolia and a bunch of Stans across to the Caspian and the ferry to Baku. Intending to return to collect the bike in 2016 and ride back to Japan. I have a few rough routes in mind.
1, Georgia - Armenia - Iran - Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Kyrgyzstan - Kazakhstan - Russia - Mongolia - Russia and highway to Vlad for the ferry. 2, Georgia - Military Hwy to Russia - Western BAM - A yet to be decided interesting way to Magadan and then the shipping to Vlad. 3, Latch on to any interesting route others are doing. My trusty DRZ is getting some attention in Tbilisi and will be well prepared for the return trip. I had intended getting back to Tbilisi around late March but an flexible on dates as long as I'm back in Japan by the end of June. |

Well I am interested too! I will be leaving in Feb all being well and can hang around in Europe for a while before teaming up.
Has anyone put a cost estimate for the journey? If some rough figures could be indicated for the trip this would be useful. |

It's getting so close to the off, one or two changes, I was planing to do this with a guy called Ian but with money and time both have forced Ian to pull out so I'm left to do this on my own, I'm still leaving on May the 5th from newcastle to Amsterdam then heading to Greece, from there I'm open to a few options that I'm happy to leave open to decide as I travel, I will be heading across Russia and the stans, indicted how I get across to Vancouver yet, I plan to finish in New York to have my bike shipped back to England, I'll post some pictures of my xt 600 Tenere soon as it's just about rebuilt, just having the touring racks cut and some welding so I can have them powder coated, I've also thought I would make some engine crash bars, it looks cracking can't wait now.

Hi there,
I plan to go back to Far East Russia this summer to ride the BAM and RoB to Magadan. This year I have 30 days holiday in July and want to ride the Bam and RoB via OSM. Plan to ride as fast as possible from Romania to Lake Baikal (10-14 days depending if I spend some days in the Altai/Tuva) and then head on the BAM and RoB to Magadan. My bike is a V-Twin, 600 cc, 1993, Honda Transalp. From Magadan I want to ship the bike to Vladivostok and from there by Yuri from Links to Europe. I worked with him before and was good. He also has good references from other travelers. I would like to split the container and the costs with other riders who will want to ship back from Vladi.I will fly direct home from Magadan. I’m looking for anyone planning a similar trip, and want to share information and ride together at least parts of the road and/or organize the shipping of the bikes back. The other option is to find anybody interested to fly to Magadan and ride back to Europe? It would save a lot of time and money at both ends. If anyone is interested please let me know your thoughts about it. Adrian asilindean@gmail.com |

I've now managed to adapt the Bmw 1200 GSA panniers to fit my xt600 tenere,
The problem I had was the boxes on the Bmw the exhaust was on the opposite side to the tenere so I reversed them round it worked out well. I cut and strengthened the bars that's attached to the frame by welding infills in between. I've also had to order some new led indecators as the standard ones are to big and will not fit with the boxes on, the new indecators are led strips so I've also ordered a inline resister so that the indecators will repeat as I'm running a lot of gadgets on the cockpit I may as well change all the lights to LEDs so it doesn't take to much out off the battery as its charging on the go, I've managed to pick up a romoss power pack this will charge some off my gadgets on the move instead of plugging into the bike then charge it up on the evening time, I've taken a few pictures where I'm at now |

It's finally came round to the time to leave, visas has arrived Friday gone, had to leave it as late because of my Mongolia visa is only valid for three months so need to enter before then, final check tomorrow on the bike,
|
Hope you have a great time!
Cheers Andy |
Thanks Andy
it's been in the planing for about 6 years, every year something came up so had to postpone it, I think I started to post on here when I joined a few years ago but every year I had to cancel. |
