Africa: east coast
Hi Guys,
I'm heading down the east coast of Africa for a few months. Anyone else going that way. I'll be in Tunisia tomorrow evening then head for Libya-Egypt-Sudan and so on. Explore Planet Earth | Motorcycle Adventure |
Hi,
I'm planning to travel down the east coast over the next couple of months as well. I don't have a firm departure date from Germany yet, as the bike is still in pieces on the garage floor, but hope to leave in the first week of November. So far the plan is Turkey - Egypt - Sudan - etc. Maybe we'll meet on the road :-) Come to think of it, as I'm still struggling with ferries to Egypt, what's the Libya - Egypt situation like at the moment? Need for Carnet (Libya is crossed out on mine ...), border, mandatory guides in Libya? I may need a backup route :-/ Best, Ben Edit: Found your post about the Libya visa, guide etc and that answers most of my questions :) It seems a good option, so long as no Carnet is required. Will you need/use a Carnet in Libya? Why did you pick the business visa over the tourist visa on arrival? |
Hi Ben. I entered Libya from Tunisia 2 days ago. No CARNet nessery. Really easy border crossing. Hassle free. Libya is fantastic as well. Real friendly helpful people. Staying here for another week or so.

I got my visa from the embassy in Canberra Australia. I took an hour all up.I had to go there though but I was working nearby anyhow.

Hi Kev
My wife and I are in Zambia heading north towards Egypt on our bike. We heard that the ferries to Turkey are cancelled and we were looking to get through Libya. I read that you just did it and there was no problem. Can you advise us how you did that? everyone is telling us that Libya is closed and you cannot go through. Thanks a lot John |
Hi John,
I'm actually in Libya, fantastic place and people. You will need to get a business visa. Get in Contact with a Guy named Masoud here in LIbya. I put a post up with info and details in the Sahara travel section of the Hubb entitled visas for Libya. If you cant find it or need any more info let me know. I'm glad to help but net here is slow as. I have just published a post on my blog about Libya so far if you want to read it Libya | Explore Planet Earth Hope to see you on the road someplace. I'll be in Egypt in 2 days, so I'll check net then |

But isn't the issue that you can't enter Libya from Egypt?
There was a thread a little while back where some people had spent a lot acquiring Libyan visas via a very reputable agency but were turned back at the border and a number of other travelers chimed in to confirm this was the case. I'll see if I can find it. Of course things may have changed but I suggest you get confrmation before you pay out on visas. There have been people successfully coming the opposite way ie Libya to Egypt for quite a while now. |

Hi Kev
Thx for the reply. I will contact Masoud and see how we can solve this. I am curious to see how you find Egypt. I met yesterday an English guy here in Zambia riding and he said that thebferyy from Aswan to Wadi Halfa was cancelled 2 months ago when he travelled ther so he had to fly his bike out of Egypt. Please let me know how you are doing while crossing Egypt. John |
Do remember it is not the visa agencies responsibility to ensure you can cross the border. Procuring a Libyan visa doesn't seem to be a problem but Salloum doesn't seem to be open to non-residents traveling west even with valid Libyan visas. If you can find any instances of non-residents crossing it would be great to hear. I have been looking out but have only heard about failed attempts. Plenty of people have crossed traveling east but that's not much use to you.
The Iskerendum ferry is currently back up and running though .... |
Hi Itchyfeet
Thanks for the info. I heard the same as you and I am anxious for some news from there of people going west. I did not know that the Turkey ferry is back on, great to hear that. I will keep everyone updated as I have a Finnish couple riding ahead of us by 1 months and they are heading to Egypt and will let us know of the newest things there. John |
Hi guys
I am getting the ferry from Aswan on the 10th so I presume its still running. I know a few guys got it 2 weeks ago as well. |
