Americas 2002
I am seeking a companion for riding from the States through Central America and South America in August 2002. I plan on taking seven or eight months for the journey. I would rather not ride alone, so I am seeking like-minded individuals or groups to share the experience. I have a rough idea of what I want to do but I am also very flexible. Contact me if you're interested in joining up!

i am looking at a simalar trip starting in oct of this year, depending on getting the time off work. i would be leaving from windsor ontario and heading down to end of the roads.i am looking at eight months of travel time their and back.

I completed a solo trip from Tex, USA to Panama(Yavisa) and back in early Mar, 2001. Took 80 days for 11,000 miles and loved it!! My point is that if you end up starting by yourself, don't hesitate. People are very friendly and you undoubtedly will meet people/other riders along the way. Personally, I can't wait to start the next leg of my trip(all of S. America). Adventure of a lifetime!!---PHW

You are right about travelling alone and meeting other travellers on the way. I have had similar experiences on non-MC adventures, and it is really a lot easier to meet and interact with locals and other travellers. However, for convenience sake on a trip like this it seemed to me that it would advisable to have a companion. I am hoping to combine the MC ride with plenty of trekking and exploring in remoter areas, such as the Tepuis in Venezuela or areas in Patagonia for example. Not having been there, I don't know what it's like, but I know that I wouldn't go on a longer trip in the wilderness here in the states, primarily for safety reasons. I also am hoping to get away from main roads and cover long distances on backroads where the going can be a bit rougher and if something should go wrong the assistance of a companion would be invaluable.

I'm also looking for company for a trip to S. America leaving Sept/Oct 2002 for 3-5 months. I'm a former paramedic, and will be taking spanish classes this next year to get prepared. Please email me if interested in any sort of discussion. Portland, Oregon.

Sam- I tried e-mailing you like I do everybody that posts a reply here, but something seems to be wrong with your e-mail, it was returned to me twice. Please write me a message at the link above <img src=http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/profile.gif> (mod by Grant)
and we'll talk more about the planned trip. Thanks, Arne [This message has been edited by Grant Johnson (edited 10 December 2001).] |

Hi,
I plan on leaving for Central & South America in October 2002. If you're in the Washington D.C. area before then drop me a line and I'll try to show you around. It sounds like we may be travelling south at the same time so maybe we can meet along the road. HughC |
Hi HughC. Probably won't make it to DC but we should try to meet up on the way south. I'll shoot you an e-mail.
Arne |
I'm planning on leaving NYC in late June, hitting Nova Scotia and Alaska, coming down to California by late August (and stopping at Burning Man) then going south from there to Argentina. I've been in Brazil 5 times, and Panama twice... I'm working on my (really poor) Spanish now.
In '98 I did a solo bicycle ride from NYC to Seattle... I agree, don't be afraid to go solo... on the other hand, there are times when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere when a traveling companion could be really helpful and prevent unnecessary adventures... |
Hi Arne,
I am planning a similar trip, leaving Chicago Sept. 2002 for S. America, I am flexible on the dates. Give me a shout sometime.j jeff [This message has been edited by lusole2 (edited 18 January 2002).] |
Hi Arne,
I'm planning on riding my KLR from N. California to Mexico and Central/South America beginning at the end of August. I'd love to connect with you and anyone else with a similar plan. I'm Canadian and I'll be riding from Calgary, Alberta to Northern California in early August. I'm taking at course in California which finishes at the end of August. Let's keep in touch. Sig |
Hi Arne,
I've delayed my trip and now plan to begin from Northern CA to Mexico and south in late August. I was planning on going in Jan as I've previously posted. I want to give Mexico (the Baja) a shot first and if that goes OK, perhaps continue on to Central and South America. I'm Canadian and I plan to be back in Calgary, Alberta at the beginning of November. Riding y2 KLR 650 with Happy Trails racks and Givi luggage. I'd be delighted to connect with anyone else interested in going. Sig |
Hi Sig,
Sounds like you'll be going a lot faster than I (we) will, as I plan on reaching Panama by the time you return to Calgary. I'll be in touch with you via e-mail. Arne |
On March,10 I am going to Quito, Ecuador to study Spainish for 2 or three month. When I return (May or June) I am going to make my way across the States, via South Carolina, and down along the Pan American.
Get in touch with me if you think we might be around the same area. Adrian |
Dudes, i'm planning to leave on my KLR in fall, either from western montana in sept or texas in oct, and head into mexco, CA, SA, and points south. hope to take 8 months if enuf money. havent decided which way to loop down into samerica- dpends on weather- either counter clockwise beginning with columbia/ equador, or clockwise beginning with venezuela/brazil (Carnival?). want to climb some peaks/backpack lots en route, and of course chase women. anybody wanta meet up?
|
Hey Tomrsewell, check your e-mail- I sent you some details of what I (we) are planning. Maybe our plans will jibe.
Hope to hear from you soon. Arne |
Hi Folks,
Your time seems to be different to my dates. But not ALL of You plan to start about Octobre in the U.S. . I like to be around San Pedro de Atacama just around Obtobre this year and I am looking for other guys (or girls) to ride for example to the Salar de Uyuni. That is a trip NOT recommended to do alone. My dates get fixed in April, when I know, how long my XT600 can rest in Chile. Should be for 180 days. Is someone of You coming in this area at that time ? Gerald |
Hi Arne,
Me and my sister we will arrive in Montreal on the 22nd of May. The same day the bikes should arrive by ship. Our plan is to cross north america east to west in two months. My sister will go back home from LA. Me, I'll be heading south later. I am still looking for part time companions on my trip through the americas. Your place (Boulder) seems to be on my way. Even the timeframe might fit :-)) Please send a short reply. sam |
Hello Sam!
I have decided to add Alaska to my route and leave a little earlier- so I would leave for Alaska around 8. June, maybe slightly earlier. If you can make it to Boulder before 8/6 then "Herzlich Wilkommen!", otherwise I will be on the road already. Then the trip into Mexico will begin in the first week of September. If we can work something out for travelling in Central America, that would be good. I have plans on riding with a friend from New York (who I met on the HUBB) for most or all of the way, but let me know if this can work. I would be very happy to ride in a small group. Regards, Arne |
I am planning on leaving from vermont sometime around the end of june or beginning of july and going all over America. If I can get some more info I would like to do the transamerica trail www.transamtrail.com . Otherwise I'll be sticking to secondary and back roads as much as I can. my motorcycle is a Honda CT90 which I am modifying for more ambitious travel. Anyone else interested in traveling along...max speed of 57mph downhill, is welcome to join. I am on a budget so I wil be camping as much as possible. If the transamtrail deal falls through, then I plan on heading up to nova scotia, newfoundland area first, then going west. Might go for alaska, but have to see how the bike is treating me, and how the trip is going etc. The ct90 is a small bike, but is a tough easy to work on little machine. between the full tank and the spare tank it has somewhere arount a 200 mile range.

G'day,
I'm planning on leaving New Jersey (US) at the beginning of September for Central & Sth. America on my KLR. I don't have any time limits, but (for lack of a better goal) I aim to be in Ushuia by about Xmas. If I (and the bike) can hack it, then I'd like to return overland back up to the west coast of the US, to Alaska, across Canada then back to NY/NJ for the flight home. I'm guessing that the trip could take 6-18 months; I've got *no* deadlines but have never tried anything near this big, so I don't know what'll happen http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif If anyone wants to hook up at some stage, drop me a line, I'll be out there! James Courtier. |
My plans have solidified as much as they're going to...
I'm leaving June 23 from New York to Nova Scotia, then back to Quebec for the Jazz fest, then out west to Alaska, possibly the Arctic Circle if I have time, then back down to Burning Man in Nevada, and some hiking in Northern Cal. From there I should be in Mexico, Oct 1, with a goal of landing in Peru or Ecuador (Arne - Galapagos Islands interest you?) around Dec 15. Then down to Chile, up through Argentina to Carneval, and then somehow back up to the Atlantic coast (Venezuela, Guianas.) I've got a 650 GS Dakar. My goal is not to miss any good parties. |
For all of you who are leaving for, and who are on the Pan American, I am headed that way starting next week (June 12). I'm leaving from Greenville, South Carolina and making my way across the States stoping in various towns to visit friends and sites. I should cross down into Mexico around the first of July via San Diego. I'm giving the trip Eight months to a year so I can take my time. Anyone interested in possibly meeting up please let me know.
Adrian |
Excellent! There's a good number of us heading down that way, that's good. Our paths will probably cross some time along the way. Tim, Galapagos would be great to check out, the high cost of getting there is no doubt more than worth it. Our plans (still) pretty much jibe. I'll likely cross into Mexico no later than middle of September. Adrian, you're getting a bit of a head start on me and some others. But unless you're real fast we'll probably meet up sometime. Safe travels on the first leg of your trip! Keep in touch...
|
Anyone want to set up and intended rendezvous point in Mexico? I'm thinking south of Mexico City, since the various paths that people are going to want to take (east from Texas, west from California) will start to converge there. Also, there's tons to see...
[This message has been edited by rndmtim (edited 11 June 2002).] |
Or how about further north, as there is plenty to see and do in the Copper Canyon area (esp. on bikes), how about Creel or Batopilas? I plan on spending at least a couple of days there, it might be a good place to wait up for others and then continue south. Tentatively Sept. 30?
|
Sounds good to me. I just got to Seattle today, after 6000 mi from NYC, up to Newfoundland and across Canada. Tues my ferry leaves for Alaska, and if all goes well I'll be in Deadhorse on Prudoe Bay inside of 2 weeks. I'll be in Nevada by the first week of Sept, so Copper Canyon on Sept 30 is doable for me.
|
Still Out there?
I can't beleive there are waht seems like 10+ people all headed to S.America on a bike this fall. I'm leaving on Dec 1. Hope to see you on the road! -Edward |
I leave next week, and will be in Mexico the 29th of Sept. After all this time saving and preparing, departure time is finally here! If you ride fast you can catch up. Hope to see you on the road.
|
Hi Arne,
it's nice to have U on the road soon. I'm in Guatemala at the moment and will take 2 weeks of spanish lessons in Antigua. I'll be in Costa Rica around November ... going slow at the moment. It's very likely you'll catch up :-) C U sam |

Hi Sam, hi Hugh,
I'll be crossing at Columbus, New Mexico, after riding own the western side of NM. From there a straight shot to Copper Canyon via Nuevo Casas Grandes. Sam, I plan on being in Costa Rica mid November, I'll let you know details as I get closer. Adios, Arne |
Just wanted to say there will be one more biker doing the Americas this fall. I'm leaving New Hampshire on October 15 to Tierra del Fuego. Hope I meet up with some of you on the road. Vayan con Dios.
Tim |
I too plan to have a look around South America this autumn. I plan to ship my bike to Buenos Aires and start from there at the beginning of November. Itinerary is BA to Santiago and from there north towards Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. Haven't managed to convince anyone to join me as yet so would like to meet up with fellow travellers along the way!
|
I am a solo biker who has been in Argentina and chile for the past month and a half. slowly making my way up north, unsure about final destinations or two days from now! i will be on my bike through early 2003 in these parts...liked the conversation going here and figured i might be able to answer any questions someone might have about these parts. maybe we'll meet on the road...to all safe travels!
