Amsterdam June 2019 - Iran, Kurgizstan, China/Tibet, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, Darwin

We're a group of three motorcycle riders heading out from Holland at the end of June and leaving Kurgizstan for China 27th July 2019. We're looking for fellow travellers to share costs. Preferably on bikes too.

We are planning to go through Turkey and Iran then the Stans meeting our guide on the Chinese border. Our trip in China will be 25 days stopping in Everest base camp and Lhasa - taking a r/h turn into Laos.

I'm from NZ (Paul) - Peter is from Holland and Lorne is Canadian and we're all ancient. (I'm the youngest at 56).

Hello,

I'm an ancient guy (53) from Istanbul/Turkey and have plan to head solo Ulan Bator leaving from Istanbul in the timeframe mid to end of June 2019. Earlier my plan was to cross through Iran however don’t know if you are aware they recently updated the legislations for motobikes entries to country. Over 250cc motorbikes are not allowed for entry anymore, so I revised the route to North going through Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirghistan, Mongolia, Gobi Desert and Ulan Bator. No idea yet about return maybe will send back the motorbike by airway or shorten the route in order to save time to ride back to Istanbul.
I have 1200GS-ADV-LC but will do the tour with an old 1100GS or 1150 GS. If takes your interest we can ride together any part of the route up to Kirgizistan.

Hi Yavuz

The 250cc limit for travellers in Iran is a disappointment. I wonder if they will be enforcing it by next year?
Looks like Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirghistan ->China might be a better route. If you're located in Istanbul we could certainly team up there.
I'll look into the visa situation re: Georgia and Russia - should be OK
We're leaving Holland at the beginning of July so timing is good.
Kind regards
Paul

Raffo, does a July 15 Torugart pass/port china crossing work for you? You may have to start a bit early for that though ... possibly end of May. See this thread on HUBB (same section as this post) - http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...a-2019-a-94562

Read last post in the thread.

Possibly interested

Hi Paul,

Am rather interested in exploring the possibility of joining you guys on your trip. Your route certainly ticks a number of boxes for me and therefore is something of a lure. However, i am a deeply committed light traveller and have a Yam WR250R specifically for this. What will you guys be on? I am just wondering whether or not we might be out of synch if you guys are on BMs or such like.

I am UK based. Incidentally, i do speak Russian (sort of) which would be handy for the Stans. Ironically, I would be reluctant to go through Russia much preferring the Iran route: less dangerous (drunk driving, bandits, corruption in Russia) and far more exotic.

Regards

Roman

Also doing Longwayride's route backwards, around the same time as you, starting in China, then Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia, etc. Might meet somewherebier

Boktor 10 Dec 2018 16:41

Hi Raffo, I'm considering a trip of that kind, by bike and more or less in the same period. I'm Dutch and would start from Amsterdam. Could you get in touch with me.

jonker 11 Dec 2018 05:05

I might meet you on the way somewhere, if all goes according to plan, I will do the reverse of your revised route from China, through Kazakh, Russia, Georgia, Turkey to Europe, hoping to leave Eastern China June 2019. Also ancient.

Hello Raffo,

Nice trip you’re planning! I’m doing a similar trip a few months later. I would like to get in touch, maybe we could help each other along the way. I’m Dutch too btw!

Cheers and safe travels!

Hi Paul, i guess you will ride via G219 from Kashgar to Lhasa:thumbup1:,it will be Great route with breathtaking view and also challenge on this highest motorable roads in the world. 99% of this route was paved but if you ride to EBC via old road you can have some off-road fun.

As one of the highest motorable roads in the world, the breathtaking scenery of Rutok county also ranks as some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet. Domar township—a town of concrete blocks and nomad tents—is one of the bleakest and most remote outposts of the People's Liberation Army at the edge of the Aksai Chin. Near the town of Mazar many trekkers turn off for both the Karakorum range and K2 base camp. Approaching the Xinjiang border, past the final Tibetan settlement of Tserang Daban is a dangerous 5,050-meter-high pass. Tibetan nomads in the area herd both yaks and two-humped camels. Descending through the western Kunlun Shan, the road crosses additional passes of 4,000 and 3,000 meters, and the final pass offers brilliant views of the Taklamakan Desert far below before descending into the Karakax River basin.

Fill a motorcycle will also takes long time in xinjiang(you need permission). Remember to fill up your tank in yecheng cause in the next 300-400 km you can't find a petrol station.

p.s. i think 25 days may be a little bit short for this adventure, i would definitely recommend you spend some time at Kalaish, EBC, Lhasa and tiger leaping gorge.

p.s.s people who want to ride through china better do it before your 60th birthday otherwise it's very very hard to get a chinese temporary motorcycle license.

adventuretourchina.com 25 Dec 2018 07:59

For China crossing part, I would suggest you find one car with your group to share the cost. Cause, if there are only motorcycles in your group, those agencies need to arrange one support car for guide seat, which will rise the quote a lot.

Dear Ruffo,

I´d be highly interested in joining you on the ride through China, and the 27th of July would fit into my own planning perfectly (starting from Germany end of April). The exact date also suggests that you've already made some concrete arrangements. Will you enter China via Torugart-Pass and leave it for Nepal, as I'm planning to do? And, at the danger of sounding silly, what is a r/h turn into Laos?
