I wan to go there mid July till end of the month,

Black Sea etc. Considering also riding farther south when time allows.

That certainly looks like fun...

A 650 tuned Supermotard would be the awesome up there.

Hi,

In midsummer it is usually pretty crowded by caravans on Transfagarasan.
I made the trip in 2014 and I must say Romania is beautiful and I will go there again for sure. Maybe already this year if my plans for Mongolia won`t work out.

rachel_norfolk 26 Feb 2016 13:21

Oh - actually, I’ll be coming back that way around that time!

Going straight from HUBB UK to Milan for a week’s web conference, then down through Italy, ferry to Greece, over the Bosphorus to set my minimum “get out of Europe” target for the year and back to UK via Romania.

Not planned much further than Milan, yet. Only have a one-way ferry ticket Poole->Cherbourg, though, so pretty flexible!

Will be on f800gsa so not super quick up the Transfagarasan!

I've been considering a trip to Romania for a couple of years now. Possibly as part of an extended road trip, looking at it as a retirement treat. Thanks for the photo, it's refreshed my enthusiasm for the idea.

Romania is perfect for trip.
Nice countryside, good food and it is cheap. Hotels were from 7.50€ to 15€ per night so next time I don`t even take tent with me..
Main roads are very good quality and most of them are new, but you must be careful with smaller roads if you don`t have turistic bike as the quality is poor (my Harely will never forgive me :))

Hi.
Are you still planning this trip?
I had a tour booked end of Apri for 19 days but had to cancel due to lots of issues and a bad back but now im fit enough.
Wondering if April / May of interest as I am considering this area.
:D

Hi

Transfagarasan is closed in winter and spring, because of the danger of avalanches, rock falls, landslides etc. usualy from November untill June.
It reopens July 1.
There is metal gate at tunnel enterance. Sometime the lock is missing so you can just open the gate and go, but in April there is still lots of snow.
We were there in July and some snow was still there...

You can check the weather conditions also on live webcam :

I had a lot of fun on the Transfagarasan last July on a fully loaded BMW XCountry 650 single. Was lucky to arrive just as it was opened after being closed for 4 hours. All the 70+ bikes went off together like a race start, was only overtaken by 2. The best road for corners ever, what a day.

Is it open in June?

I have been looking at Romania for a couple of weeks now and was/am under the impression that the highway opens in early June is this correct? I plan to leave the UK (Manchester) on June the 8th and have a rough timescale of 16/18 days making my way across Europe via France Luxembourg Germany Austria Czechoslovakia and Hungary then returning Via Bratislava and Poland. I only intend doing 200/300 miles a day so I should have plenty of time to see where I have been and can go off route if the notion takes me. However if the Transfargarasan highway is closed I will do Col de Turini in France and hopefully the Amalfi coast road in Italy to be honest I haven't fully decided which route to take the only thing that is fixed is I leave on the 8th of June and have to be back by the 27th so anybody can tell me if the Transfargarasan highway is definitely open in mid June I would appreciate it and if anybody wants to join me on any part of the trip you are more than welcome. I am riding a 15 year old Honda CB500 and intend to stay in hotels and hostels the whole time. I have a tent which has been packed and ridden round Europe and Scotland but I have never used it always deciding for the sake of 20, 25 Euros I get a better sleep in a bed and start early the next morning showered and fed allowing me to enjoy the trip more than endure it at 53 I prefer the home comforts but as usual I will pack my tent with good intentions of using it.

I went last year in June - report here: UK to Romania: 2 week trip
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ad.php?t=82366

Last June Transfagarasan had not quite opened but the Trans Alpina had. It was great, as was Romania so I wouldn't worry too much as you should be fine and have a excellent alternative option.

Here's a write of my trip to Romania last year for some ideas:-

countdown to the off

Hi there I am only 5 weeks away from my long awaited trip to Romania and am constantly scouring the internet for information concerning the opening times of the Transfagarasan pass the consensus of opinion seems to be that although the road is officially closed until the 1st of july you can still cross the whole highway providing the snow has gone and the road is passable, and even if the road is closed at Piscu Black it is still worth the journey to travel the open section and follow the alternative route? opinions and advice appreciated as I am on a limited time schedule (3 weeks) and want to make the most of my trip.
Anyone doing a similar trip? I set off on the 8th of June from Manchester UK maybe we could meet up for part of the route.
