Anyone know what to see in Kiev ?
As fate would have it I find myself in Kiev at the moment with some spare time on my hands. Anyone got any hot tips for me on what I should see while I am here ? Heading back westwards on Wednesday .... :thumbup1:

The disaster museum
Howdy---There is a museum of the Chernobyl disaster which is just about the saddest thing you ever saw. It's in an old fire station and with a guided tour shows a lot of pictures and the lecture is good.

A Kiwi in Kiev
Hope you've not moved on yet.
Theres the Great Gate of Kiev (But no Emmerson Lake and Palmer, or Russian music.) There's the huge outdoor museum to the Great Patriotic War. A collection of aircraft, including an early Ilysion that looks remarkably like a Dakota DC3.(Look for the giant statue in stainless steel overlooking the river. The museum is around the base of it.) There are the cathedrals, Particularly St Sofia (Green and gold) about 1000 years old and I think Mikoliev (Blue and Gold,) about 9 years old.Rebuilt since the fall of Communism. Loads of stuff. Enjoy chicken Kiev , borcht and salo. as well as the national beverage. Best wishes. Kiwi7 |
Thanks guys, now back home but managed to get to look at a few of the sites . Sadly the weather wasn't ideal for site seeing as it was cold and foggy so no spectaular views over the Dniepr river this time. I didn't make it to the Chernobyl museum due to lack of time but saw one or two of the Ukrainian orthodox catherdrals which are breathtaking !!
Definitley recommend visiting Kiev to anyone. The city feels very safe and is quite beautiful in many parts. People were freindly and it's fun to go into a department store which is like stepping back in time to a Soviet era establishment . I'll be back for sure - next time on the bike ! Ride safe |
