ANZAC Heritage Tour - North Africa etc
Hey All,
I'm thinking of doing an ANZAC heritage tour, basically some of the key palces that the ANZACs fought during WW1 & 2. So the initial thought is to set off towards end of March or start of April going to: Gallipoli (Turkey) El Alamein (Egypt) Benghazi (Libya) Tobruk (Libya) Coming back via either Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco then back to the UK or straight from Libya to Algeria, Morocco then back to UK... Not sure yet of total distance (can't really find a route planner to plan the North African bit) but I have initially enquired as to Libya route fees etc and they came back with a cost of 105-190 euros per person per day (depending on size) including all meals, sleeping, visits to sites and the necessary tour guide for the duration of the visit... Any takers or ideas/recommendations? |
How would you go from Turkey to Egypt?
Personally I think that via Syria and Jordan would be a great leg to ride. I think that the border between Morocco and Algeria (and vice-versa) is closed. It's difficult to get any solid information. If you go to Algeria from Tunisia then I believe you will need to come back into Tunisia (or go south through the magreb). From Tunis (Tunisia) there are ferries to Italy and France. All in all it's a great sounding trip, I'd like to do it myself. Maybe end 2011... :scooter: |
So the thinking is Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria...and take a punt on the Morocco/Algeria crossing, otherwise track back to Oran and ferry it to Alicante which is dooable...(or one of the ferry jumps from Algeria to mainland Europe)...
Obviously the cross from Jordan to Egypt is a bit of an issue but apparently you can catcha a ferry easily enough (£50 for a 90min journey, not bad) avoiding Israel all together... |
Incidently, distance wise from London to the ferry point in Algeria (or Morocco really not a huge difference) is about 9000km give or take...

Hey Electric Monk,
Currently sat in Eceabat near Gallipoli! Would definitley recommend you stay in this town............. The Crowded House Hotel is excellent, thoroughly recommend it, clean and comfortable with good rate ! Hotel owner is called Paulie, who we are currently sat having a beer with and putting the world to rights! This area of the world is great place to visit and the guys here have a wealth of info! Hope the planning goes well and hope this helps ! There is no 'secure parking' but the bikes are safe parked down a side street with camera surveillance!! Cheers LOU and ED on the road to 'hopefully' to Cape Town Hotel Crowded House - Eceabat, Gallipoli, Canakkale accommodation |
