Australia-Indonesia-Thailand-2016

Hi,
Looking into planning a trip to start mid-September 2016.
Darwin-Timor Leste-Flores-Sumbawa-Lombok-Bali-Java-Sumatra-Malaysia-Thailand-Cambodia. Maybe shipping bike home or just travel the same as above but in reverse?
Also looking into another alternative in shipping from Melbourne Australia to either Penang or Bangkok then touring around Thailand/Cambodia and then travelling as above over land above back to Australia.
Route is very flexible at this stage and company is welcome. Plan to be back in Oz by around mid-January 2017
Anyone interested to hang out for parts of the trip, share stories, shipping expenses etc - feel free to contact.
Daryl.

Re Aus to Thai Trip

Hi,
Just a show of interest in your trip as I have been considering a similar route ie Melb/Darwin/Se Asia. I am interested to know if you have made enquiries regarding shipping and transport/ and border crossings within Se Asia?

Please respond at your convenience,

regards Michael.

Is a carnet required for these countries?

Carnet is required for East Timor, Indonesia and Malaysia. Not for Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam etc.

Hi,

I was looking into a similar trip earlier this year, but gave up when a contact at Toll Holdings in Dili advised that it was taking ships about 10 days to gain access to the port after arriving in Timor, and some were continuing on their journey without unloading cargo due to the wait times.

I could not find any information on crossing from Timor-Leste to Indonesia with a motorcycle. I contacted the Indonesian Embassies in Canberra and Dili; Canberra were quite helpful, but did not have any specific information. Dili did not respond to my queries.

Paul

Indonesian Ferry Timetable

Hi,
Below is a link to the ferry timetable. They don't always run to the schedule but it gives anyone interested a bit of an idea.

Hi Daryl,

Thank you for the ferry information. I was considering a land crossing between Timor Leste and West Timor, but could not confirm what customs and immigration documentation was required or or how long I could stay.

I have since spoken to a contact based in Bali who has indicated that as long as I have carnet my bike can be used in Indonesia for 12 months before I need to export it. I can get an initial 30-day tourist visa, which can be extended for a further 30 days.

Regards

Paul

very interesting.
how realistic is it to organize ferry crossings for Bali-Lombok-Sumbawa-Flores on a rented bike?
and then return to directly Bali by some sort of transport vessel?
thanks!

Theres nobody checking the ownership of a vehicle on those ferries - so on your own bike or on a rented bike shouldnt be any problem at all.

If you are travelling with the bike no organisation is required at all as the ferries are roll on - roll off vehicle ferries, you simply buy a ticket and ride on to the ferry, park it and walk up to the passenger deck - thousands of people do it every day.

Returning the bike to Bali unaccompanied is somewhat more difficult as you will need to arrange for someone to collect the bike at the other end, and also arrange to get the keys and shipping paperwork to them.

Yes, there are ships from Flores direct to Lombok and Surabaya (Java) which you can take a bike aboard - not sure about Bali, but that's not to say there isn't.

Daryl, how soon before you head off to Lombok? - I am scheduled to be riding in Japan in September.:thumbup1:

Indonesia

Hi Farquhar,
Only 9 weeks and 5 days to go, not that I'm counting - much! So Saturday the 17th September and I'm good to go.
Merantau has had my rear Givi topbox bracket modified to fit the Honda, so will just need to install a couple of usb plugs (one under seat the other on the bars) and a usb on Merantau's Kawasaki and we're good to go. Straight over to Sumbawa for a few days, Flores and up to Sulawesi for a few weeks. Return back to Flores where Merantau will head home and I'll keep making my way over to Timor if all goes to plan?
Have taken your advice re the seat cover for the Honda and Merantau's Kawasaki,:thumbup1: soon see how it works.
I'll be in contact soon Farquhar.
Cheers,
Daryl.

very interesting!
do you have more info please?
ive read about tour boats from Lombok to Flores & return, but they dont allow motorbikes on board.
thanks

Purcitron, the Pelni ferry travels from Labuan Bajo to Surabaya via Lombo and will carry your motorbike. It is not a daily ferry, so you will need to plan and schedule in advance.

However, if you are able to ride the bike back it would be much easier - take the overnight ferry from Labuan Bajo to Sape, ride all the way across Sumbawa the next day (direct route via Mataram), and catch the ferry to Lombok that evening.

Daryl, good to hear you are all set and ready to go. The GIVI topboxes are brilliant, I've had one for over 10 years and they are a great way to keep your luggage secure whilst on the road, combined with ease of removal for overnight stops.

Give me a call if I can help further, I'll likely be riding a Honda 110 in Japan too.

Hello all,

My girlfriend and I are planning a to get to East-Timor too but on a different date. I managed to get in touch with this company, very helpful and even this she may take awhile to reply when she's looking for information she does reply in the end.

i emailed https://www.pelni.co.id/ asking if the ship between Labuan Bajo and Lombok allows motorbikes on board.
their answer was not clear.. language barrier.
but the ship is named "KM.Tilongkabila".
does this info seem correct to you?

The airfreight option sounds great. Would you be able to get some info on that, like agent or contacts?
Going that way soon :)

Aus to Indo

Hi All.
I will want to ship my bike from Darwin across to Indo towards the end of this year. Is going via Dili, in East Timor the only option or would I be able to go to an Indonesian port? Is there a ferry from West Timor across to the next island?
I'm in two minds whether to wait until I reach Darwin to sort this out or get things organised well ahead of time. How easy would it be to get the bike crated up in Darwin?
Any suggestions, names of shipping companies etc. would be much appreciated.
Final thought. If any of you are planning to ride through Indo and then across to Malaysia, what options have you found for shipping at that end of the journey?
With regards to the Indo visa, how did you overcome their requirement to have a ticket out of the country?
Thanks for any help,

Geoff

ANL/Toll is the company that have ships from Darwin to Dili. The same ship is also docking at Singapore - so you could of course ship your bike there as well.
But my advice is not to skip the south-eastern most islands in Indonesia, Flores, Sumbawa, Lombok as those are well worth spending some on. And the traffic is much lighter than Bali, Java and parts of Sumatra. On those places the traffic is just totally insane - its not possible to describe it with words as it has to be experinced.

There are ferries from Kupang in West-Timor to at least two destinations on Flores - Aimere and Larantuka so no worries about that.

If youre shipping back to Australia from Malaysia I guess airfreight is a possibility, or maybe ANL/Toll from Singapore and back to Darwin could be an option?

Ticket out of Indonesia - well if you book a full price ticket it will in most cases be refundable. Or you could just book a cheap ticket from Bali and throw it in the litter.

Thanks for all the info Snakeboy.
I've had some contact with a company called Bollore too. They also go to Dili. I think it's the one that Daryl is using After Malaysia I'll be heading to Thailand then Myanmar and India - I hope. Getting the bike into Thailand is a whole other box of frogs since they've introduced new regulations.
So it looks like Dili is the best option and going there will add another country to the list of those visited.
Cheers,
Geoff

Hi guys,

I'm in Darwin and just packed my bike into a container so I'll let you know what I've found with shipping so far:
-There was only one bike shop (NT motorcycles) that had crates and they were charging $150 for them. I didn't try to bargain because I thought the guys were rude but you might have some luck (I saw the crates in a skip outside for recycling later).
-They offered two crate sizes, the smallest was was ~2.5 CBM
-In the end the crated cost was almost identical to the uncrated so I just shipped uncrated for ~ 850 AUD on this side.
-If you really want to save $$ you could investigate putting together your own wooden crate with a smaller volume

I also went with Bollore logistics - their crated prices were quite a lot cheaper then dealing directly with ANL and they were very friendly and helpful. I didn't check their uncrated prices against ANL.

Let me know if you want to know the actual numbers.
Jason

I didnt use any crate at all when shipping Dili - Darwin last year with ANL/Toll. We put the bike directly into a container. You will need to buy decent straps though. They costed 20 USD a piece and one needed 4 straps.

Hi Snakeboy, can I ask you how much it cost you in total?
And how long it took?
And did you deal directly with ANL or an agent?

Will probably go the same way in 2 months.

Thank a lot for info :)

I contacted ANL/Toll directly so no agent involved.

The cost was 850 USD on the Timor side and another 230 AUSD in Darwin.

It took 18 days as far as I remember. The ship is sailing Darwin-Dili-Singapore-Darwin - so thats why.

This was last year september/october.
