Brazil to Colombia via the Amazon River in Early April
 

I’m thinking of heading into Brazil taking a boat up the Amazon, riding into Venezuela and onward to Colombia. Anyone in the area headed the same way?

I've had similar thoughts. I'm in Peru now, where are you?

I'm in Ushuaia. I should be leaving in a day or so and taking the ferry to Puerto Montt. Then its north east.

A word of caution Jeff, make sure you have a sharp knife when exploring the Amazon. If you have an unfortunate encounter with a Candiru while swimming, you may just have to remove the painful appendage! Best of luck!!

I am just about in Lima, I guess that means you are somewhat ahead of me Jeff, in terms of making a practical connection...would be nice to do that journey back though. Were you going to travel up the Brazil coast to Belem Jeff
Did you guys have any trouble with seguro in Peru. Cops pulled me over yesterday and after looking at my paperwork asked for segura. I said no tengo. They said $50 or no papers back and seize bike. I paid, much against my personal inclinations. I went to insurance office in Trujillo to inquire and they only sell by year...540 soles or about $180...they do not do it by day or even a month minimum. I declined thinking even if I have to pay off another cop I am ahead, though this really burns me. The system is perfect to encourage police corruption, the police association must be on the Positiva insurance Board.

Then right after that I came upon a road accident where a Colombian on BMW 1200GS smacked headon into a car and was killed, bike exploded and was still burning when I got there. Very sad.

I’m just starting to look into the ride through Brazil but for now, I’m taking the Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt ferry on the 6th. Arrive in Puerto Montt on the 9th. Then I would head over to Bariloche and work my way to Buenos Aires. Then the idea would be to ride to Belem, take a boat to Manaus and then ride north through Venezuela to Bogota. If I don’t make it that far then I would ship the bike to the US someplace in Brazil.

Ribaros, What route are you thinking of?

Larry, I was never stopped in Peru buy the Cops. Lucky I guess as I didn’t have segura. One guy I talked to showed was stopped but showed the cops his segura from Colombia. Even thought it was not valid for Peru, It worked.

Ya, what Jeff said about Colombian insurance really works! I bought my insurance for Colombia in Cali at Suramericana. I was pulled over 5 times in Peru. First time was a roadblock, twice I was waved in by cops at the side of the road (they kept saying they wanted `firma, firma'! When I offered documentos they said `no, no, firma!'. I think now that they wanted my autograph!:thumbup1:) and I was pulled over twice for speeding. Only two times was I asked for seguro and both times I gave them my Colombian seguro and both times it worked!
Larry, if you bought your insurance from the same company you'll notice that nowhere on the card does it say `Colombia'! If you get pulled over again, give it a try!!

actually I did give him that but somehow he knew it was not Peru issued. maybe this cop figured it out motivated as he was by a revenue opportunity
The Brazil thing looks great but even with me not planning to go to go to TDF(I spent enough time in arctic canada thanks) I might be a little behind you guys. Let´s keep in touch. I could possibly follow you guys and learn from your mistakes, ha.
