Cape Town to Cairo and beyond starting Oct/Nov 2015

Anyone up for riding East Africa starting about October/November 2015 from South Africa?

My route and timing is flexible, the map is more or less general. Ideally would make Turkey by March if not sooner and head east towards India and Nepal and down to Bangkok. Possible run up to Mongolia if time and tires permit.

I’m on a DR650 and will be concluding an RTW that includes a full circuit of South America and West Africa from Morocco to Cape Town.

Hey Jmi... do you have tips on getting from Israel to Turkey (or Greece), can you share?

I've researched and it seems that ferry passage from Haifa, Israel, is possible with a booking through rosenfeld.net -- not sure if it goes thru Cyprus or not. Some intel on Israel -> Turkey on the HUBB Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/theh...3780907718515/

Would love to ride Iran but as an American I would need a full-time Iranian guide -- eh.

May 2015 will be too soon for me Roland. I could swing September and am actually thinking about that....

After getting some air shipping quotes, turns out it's less expensive to get the bike to Johannesburg than Cape Town so I'll start out from J'burg.

Jmi, South African Airways seems to be the least expensive, at least at this time -- much less than British Airways.

$1500 USD to fly from Toronto to Johannesburg with the bike partially disassembled in a crate (wheels, handlebars, top box etc. off to reduce dimensions). That cost includes the crate. I worked through a small local customs broker in Toronto.

Hi,

I am in kyrgyzstan now, will be in turkey september, i'm only considering my options for africa now. Most of those countries probably require carnet dont they? this is difficult for me as i bought the bike in japan, but i'm from australia.

i think another option is to buy another bike in europe, prob germany cos i have relations, and get the carnet there. Any thoughts?

cheers,
regie

Hi regie... on the east side of Africa, only Egypt and Sudan require a carnet to the best of my knowledge. Not required in the other countries.

Seems that once in a while someone posts about getting in and out of Egypt without a carnet -- not sure. The HUBB links thru this URL offer some insights the carnet situation for Egypt...

site:horizonsunlimited.com carnet egypt - Google Search

Besides buying a bike in Europe, another option to consider is buying a bike in South Africa and riding off. There's a live thread on that topic here ...

Looks a good route - i have a bike waiting in South Africa to ride a similar route but cant go until June 2016. Keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi Guys, In 2014 i did London to Cape Town along the west coast of Africa.
I am very keen to do the east coast in 2016, the aim is to reach Europe at the start of Summer there so leaving SA around April/May and also avoiding the rain season in Africa.

Hey that sounds great, we must stay in touch.
if all goes to plan and u are keen maybe we can travel together

AFRICA in the fall of 2015

I am interested. I would ride my KLR with Pelican cases which would size up to your DR well I suppose. My schedule is flexible as well. I rode this bike from Chicago to Ushuaia in 2009 and it did everything I asked of it except manage high speed winds well. Like your buddy in Africa, my custom built rear shock blew out, right in the middle of Bolivia on high speed washboard. You just don't realize how important your rear shock damping is until you don't have any!

Hey guys, I just put my bike on a boat headed to Cape Town and I plan on doing a similar Africa trip as discussed here. Leaving South Africa in early September. Some of my planned route looks a bit different but I would love to compare notes as we head north if nothing else. And it would always be nice to have a friend crossing the Nubian Desert, ha. I am on a KLR650, I just finished a California to Germany to Ghana trip.

Ride Far 29 Apr 2015 14:19

Crawford … great swapping notes with you!

Sphinxboy… sounds great. The route on my map is just a rough line, still mapping out destinations and much of it will be done on the fly.

Looks like our timing is off by a few weeks if you’re starting out in early September from Cape Town. I’m looking at late September / first of October starting from Jo’burg but do have flexibility. How long are you planning to make it to Egypt…? to see the Sphinx I presume… :)
