We are in Omsk heading towards you. Should be in Baikal is a week or so. Then UlAn Ude before South to Mongolia.
Stay in touch and we will see each other on the road and have a beer. Nigel and Sharyn Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Hello Paul,
I had planned (see HUB) to be in Vlad this week (planned 6 months ago for start east to west June 1) However due to the non sale of my house I will need to postpone until next year. I will be riding in Europe in August though. My question : Do you plan to keep a blog of your travels. If not- consider it- it is simple and your friends/folks at home can follow you progress on an automatic map. The cost is nil. I would like to follow you when you leave and see how you fare. kind regards |

Hi RTW Paul,

Welcome to Russia. We are at least a week away, maybe two. I hope that We can meet near Baikal in 10 days or so if you find yourself there,

Hi Nigel,
I'm on my way to Ulaan Baataar in 2 days 15th. Probably back to Ulan Ude, (Same Hostel) Peak Hostel, Then Lake Baikal,25th-28th for a few days, so hope to meet up there. I never book anything, so don't know where I'll end up but I am set up for camping if need be. Regard's, Paul. |
Brilliant, It looks like a plan is coming together. UPS have my parts and in 1 hour I will collect them and start fixing the bike. Should be heading East, leaving Novosibirsk by 17th June and in Baikal by 26th or so.
Am going slowly after the bike broke and we can't afford that twice. Bloody Russian roads! |
East to west
Hi Nigel,
Could be a good chance to meet up at Lake Baikal, as long as I can get back into Russia, Had a few hassles getting out, They don't like Iranian Visa'a. Found a great place in the middle of Ulaan Baataar, Gana's guest house, with Wi Fi for $20 a night, more handy than Oasis is more out of town. Hope the bike is ok now. Paul. |

Do you have a gps waypoint/grid for that hostel or a name please, planning on stopping in Ulan-Ude next year coming up from Mongolia. Does it have Wi-Fi? Cheers and enjoy Caps |

Hi Paul and the rest of the travelers
I am in Kazan heading towards Vladivostok. It looks like I am behind some of you. I plan to be in Novosibirsk next week Friday and then head to Irkutsk by Monday or Tuesday, after I service my bike in Novosibirsk. Paul, I have some good places for you to stay on your route West, let me know if you are interested. I met some amazing bikers here and they are willing to help. How was Chita and the remote road like? I hear lots of stories from Russian bikers about bandits and criminals on that stretch? Did you encounter any problems? Hi Caps/wearenomads
It's in the previous tag's to remind I think my SatNav had the Peaks Hostel at N51' 50' 399 E107' 36' 329 From the East to centre of Ulan Ude Lenin Square follow the road to the top of the hill. There is a monument and before the tram stop turn right at hairdresser. Big new building in front of you between blocks of flats, Nice people, no wi-fi I think. Top of hill (Peak Hostel) Wearenomads, Could meet up with you guys at Lake Baikal or close to, then swap stories. Should be in the area 25th / 30th June. Keep in touch, Paul. |
West to East
Hi Paul,
I should leave Novosibirsk on the 1st of July, depending on my bike service. Then I stay for 2 nights in Krasnoyarsk, I have to take 2 night to rest because I had an accident outside Moscow and I am still tender. Truck drivers here are relentless. You didn't tell me if you had any troubles around Chita with bandits, and what about the road conditions? I too hope we can meet up and have beer and swap stories. |
East to west
Hi John,
wearenomadbikers, Two bikers were murdered a while back the east side of Chita, I camped their and was not murdered, In fact I'm very well. Just think about all the people not murdered, the odds are on your side. I could not find the road to Mongolia from Chita, and followed the main road, rough as it was, but very beautiful to Ulan Ude. Hope your not too sore. All the best, Paul. |
Hi Paul,
Thanks for this. How long is the rough road and is it from Chita to Ulan Ude or from Chita towards Vladivostok? I am trying to figure out what to do, if I don't heal properly by then. I have 2 hairline fractures in my elbow, bruised rib and a major bruise on my hip plus sprained ankle. So, it would make it difficult if the bad road goes for 1000 km. Tell me a little bit about the road from Khabarovsk to Ulan Ude, if you don't mind, so I can have some idea of the conditions. I hope I am not forced to take the train to avoid that part. Thanks again |
East to west
Hi wearenomadbikers,
Some parts of the road from Ulan Ude to Chita are constant but steady bumps, Some of the roadworks you need to be on the peg's (Footrests) and the road to Vladivostok is not too bad, just a few roadworks, but you have to have your eyes wide open to miss some pot holes. You sound a little sore, only you know how you feel, If I had more than half my strength, I'd give it a go, or maybe wait a little longer rather than put it on a train. Hope this is of help. Paul. |
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info, it helps a lot. Are you in Mongolia now, or back in Russia? I made it to Ufa and tomorrow I am heading to Chelyabinsk. I hope to meet you somewhere so we can chat some more. where did you sleep between Svobodny and Chita? I cannot find anything on that stretch. Thanks John |
how much have you been paying for fuel across Russia?
i arrive in the east in a few days and will be riding west so any waypoints for places to stay or good camping is anyone doing the road of bones west to east this year? i'm interested to hear road conditions and if its even doable as last year was a no go |
Hi Paul,
I have excellent contacts from Novosibirsk all the way to Moscow, great bikers and friends who have helped me and are willing to help other bikers. Email me: nomadsportsacademy@gmail.com if you think you would need their help. they can take you to see places that might be difficult to find on your own, they speak excellent English and can advise on most matters concerning Russia. John |
John
thanks but i am heading down into the stans before then and will only enter Russia again for a short time as i hug the Caspian sea prior to entry into Georgia if you can save waypoints from Novosibirsk heading east now thats information i can use ...drop me an email, i'll be doing the same heading in your direction how about gas prices? |
So far, the average I paid was 60 Euro cents per litre. Seems to be the norm across Russia.
As soon as I get your email, I will send you an interesting chart of the places from Irkutsk towards the East, done by Russian truck drivers, with stops, cafes, dangers, road condition and resting places. |
East to west
Hello John and RTW Paul,
Had a bad day returning from Mongolia, have a leaking radiator and a lot of grief from the Russian Custom's because of my Iranian visa, So now at the border town of Kyaknta, bloody knackered and ready for a good sleep. The (Knead-it) metal putty has worked so far, but I would not bet money on it lasting. Not got my map handy but tomorrow I'm heading to Lake Baikal. No not doing the road of bones on my own, $nz1 or 50 pence uk for gas. Think thats right. Cant tell you where I stayed cause I can't read the signs, but no problem finding places. All the best, Paul. |
Paul, we are in Baykalsk town tonight then Ulaan Ude this week. Chila in June we hope. What is the fuel situation after Chita to Vladivostok please
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
John , if you plan to service your bike in Novosibirsk I can recommend Stoppie. His details have been posted by me complete with gps. Basically it is south on Bolshevic ulitsa ( heading towards Birsk town) until you see on the right a glass ex-Nissan HQ. Now abandoned. After 1km he is down dirt road on right.
I hope that helps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
John, re Bandits. They don't get up early so set your alarm and enjoy the early mornings. Stop early, get a room and sleep. You won't see bandits that way Stay safe out there.
|
RTW Paul, did you find fuel before Chita? We are heading. East so any help on fuel after Chita for us will be great. Should we get 20 litres addition as well as a full tank?
Nigel |

We leave Baykalsk and head for. Ulaan Ude by 24th June or 25 th Would love to meet up as you head West, Nigel |
As soon as I get your email, I will send you an interesting chart of the places from Irkutsk towards the East, done by Russian truck drivers, with stops, cafes, dangers, road condition and resting places.

Hi Nigel,
I'm just up the road from you in Babushkin, I'm going to stay here a couple of day's maybe more to catch up with my notes and check out the bike. How long will you be in Bakal'sk? I'm in a road house type place on your right, heading East, centre of the village, I think, Not been right through yet but want to have a good look about tomorrow. How many of you are there? Cost here Rub1000 a night with food avaliable. Maybe meet up, Paul. |
Hi everyone involved in this East -West route, or the other way like I am
Here is the list I got from a very good friend in Moscow, regarding the road from Chita to Khabarovsk, compiled by Russian truck drivers to help each other on the road with info. He translated the list, so each point starts in Russian and ends in English, so read carefully. It is the most detailed info I found so far on this stretch. How I wish I was in Irkutsk now and join you guys heading East. I am just in Chelyabinsk, though, so I have to wait some more until I get there. John 1. From Зилово (Zilovo) to Сбегов (Sbegov) - NO cellular connection at all (100km) 2. check the link Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world! there are hotels (отель), motels (мотель) and cafe (кафе) are pinned by mototravellers. 3. Check files attached - there is a table formatted track from Khabarovsk to Chita - very helpful, but keep in mind it might be outdated. An the notice from guys - don't go to cafes at evening or early morning - most possible time to get robbed. Never left your belongings unattended. Keep your money/documents all the time with you. If you'll find the trach Khabarovsk - Chita helpful - I will translate the track Chita - Novosibirsk for you. Sorry John,
Got you mixed up with Nigel, but thank's again. Paul G |
Hi Paul/rest of the riders,
No problem, anything to help. I met today the local bike club in Chelyabinsk and they also gave me a list of bikers across Russia with emails and phone numbers for anyone that needs help along the way. Let me know if someone is interested in that. Safe travels |

On the road to Irkutsk tomorrow, from Babushkin, after a nice rest day. If I see you on the road, give us a wave, (Karkie Jacket, Silver Helmet)

Sorry but we seem to have missed each other. No wifi for four days. We are now in Chita after some dramas!
Did you find a place to stay between Chita and Khabarovsk? Good luck on your travels West. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Hi Nigel,
I hope you guys are OK. What happened? Nothing major I hope. For accommodation list, see my input above on this thread, it is quite comprehensive, I got it from the Russian truck drivers. It might help you with accommodation on the way to Khabarovsk. John |

Hi Guy's,

I just arrived in Krasnoyarsk 2 hours ago. How long are you here for? Let's meet for a beer tomorrow, Tuesday. I know bikers here that can help you if you want to. Thanks John |
