Frankfurt to Caucasus and back
I am looking for organizing a group of travellers for a trip from frankfurt, through Poland, Ukraine, Georgia to Armenia and back, sometimes in May 2006. I am still working on logisitics and will know how long it will take, but first I need to know if anyone is interested.
Ukraine and Caucausus are wonderful and inexpensive. I speak a bit of Russian that can help. ------------------ Alec in Calgary |
AFAIK there is no way to cross Caucasus due to a very unstable political situation. I read some reports about people traveling from Poland to Georgia but they had taken a ferry either from Ukraine or from Russia directly to Georgia. Also read about people trying opposite direction (Georgia -> Russia) by car - they were turned back at the border.
If you have any questions about traveling through Poland, just ask. Kris |
Thanks Chris.
it makes sense to take a ferry. I will consider this. Quote:

Hello, it is possible to take ferry from Ukraine (near Odessa) and reach Georgia directly. It is rather expensive (about 250 USD). Then you can tavel to Armenia and Azerbaijan. You can return from Georgia to Turkey and then to Europe. It is impossible to enter Turkey from Armenia. Your russian will be very useful in post Soviet countries.

Hey Alec,
Any ball park ideas on how long you might want to spend on this journey? I would absolutely love to do this trip! I have commited to a few weeks in central america this winter though, ( I leave for the first leg in the morning )so time and money may not allow it. Still, I would be very interested in hearing about any proposed schedule and budget you might have thought of. Would you ship the bike, or fly it to Frankfurt? Later, Mike. |
I have to find out first, how many "crazy people" ( my wife's quote) are willing to go. Yes, I want to ship the bikes by air to Frankfurt. I am in Calgary and the direct flight there helps. It will cost about Can $650, one way.
So far either May or September departure is considered. I am planning one month, but would rather not rush. So far I am using $60/day as a budget ball park figure. Al this will get less fuzzy, as we get closer to the departure date. Plan to have things firmed up about 3 months before the departure date Quote:

Alec, are you in the Calgary Community? They are planning a get-together soon, and there are some very experienced travellers in the Calgary Community you might want to talk to.

Alec,
I am in Calgary as well, so if you want to talk about potential plans send me an e-mail. I just returned from Mexico and will go back in mid January, so I have a few weeks at home now. (need to make some more money!) |
