From France to Mongolia & return

Hello everybody!
I am riding a GS R 1200 Adv with no time limit (within reasonable))
I am planning to depart from France (Annecy) by the end of April for a long trip with final destination Mongolia throughout Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece (stop over to rest a bit) Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia.
I am shortly starting the preparation process including to seek for visas wherever necessary, thus I would appreciate any suggestion or sharing of experience over the above mentioned journey.
If anyone wants to join, I shall be delighted to share such a great challenging trip.
Thank you.

Salut Pierre

Pierre

Hi
I'm considering the same trip this year, hopefully leaving in the Spring. I'm from Ireland which would be y starting point. Lets discuss mutual plans

Centaure 9 Jan 2018 10:32

Hello Brian
Happy to hear that you are considering a similar round trip.
It would be great if we can arrange to travel together.
My ideal departure date would be the first week of may even though I am flexible.
What kind of motorbike do you ride?
Kind regards,
Pierre

Bonjour Mickael,
Amicalement
Pierre

Pongo 10 Jan 2018 19:45

Bonsoir,

You really need to talk to Thierry Floreck ( Tiger3 here on the HUBB), he has ridden to Mongolia probably every year for the last 3-4 years on his 1200GS.

He has made several excellent presentations of his trips at the HU france meeting, and organised last years event after spending 3 months on the road riding from the Dordogne to Mongolia and back.!

Good luck.

Centaure 10 Jan 2018 20:00

Many thanks Pongo.
Will follow your recommendation.
Cheers
Pierre

Hi Bento,
Travelling from Europe to Australia was actually my initial plan however I had to re-dimension my plan and decided to reach Mongolia taking off from Annecy.
Yet, along the way, I might change my plan (eventually) and keep going to Australia via ???
Can you please inform the route you have chosen, the length of time of your trip, the provisional budget and the bike & equipment you have selected?
Thanks and regards,
Pierre

I'm still planning a lot of stuff. I invited you to the FB group, send me a message on FB if you want to ask me something :-)

My rough plan is to start in May in The Netherlands and go to Turkey, maybe a small detour to Baku, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kirgizstan, China, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, (maybe Vietnam?), Malaysia, Indonesia, East-Timor and then ship to Australia.

I don't have a set timeframe but I'm expecting to travel for about a year or so. Maybe if I'm still up for it at the end I'll ship to South Africa and back to Europe from there haha.

Anyway. Route through Europe is still unknown but I think I will drive south as fast as I can to get to nicer weather. Maybe via Lyon > Italy so that's close to Annecy. Thinking of Annecy makes me want to go on a skiing trip :-D

Pierre

Via (shipping from) Vladivostok and/or Japan ?

That is probably the easiest in terms of all the countries and visas.

I hope you have an enjoyable trip. Whatever you do don't navigate by Garmin as it will most likely send you via Capetown. :)

Actually 3 however there is some disagreement over the departing date from EU Countries.
I personally intend to tentatively leave on the 2nd of April from France, moreover I am considering to change a bit my trip as I learned that entering Iran requires a deposit of 1.5 the nominal price of the Motorbike which in my case is a substantial amount, the bike being new! Therefore, as a matter of principle I might shortcut Iran and Turkmenistan and catch a ferryboat in Azerbaijan going to Kazakstan.
