Mauretania early December, then the rest of west africa

We are a family of four (kids 3 and 6 years old) driving from Sweden to South Africa through the Westafrican route in a Nissan Patrol with roof top tent. Start mid October 2016 (5 weeks ago) and preliminary finish end of July 2017.

We are currently in Morocco. We are planning to cross Mauretania in about 10-14 Days and are looking for someone to drive convay with.

After that we will spend the next months working out way east and then south through Senegal, Bissau, Guinea...=> Cameroon (maybe in March 2017)...=> South Africa (July 2017). Anyone crossing our path with some storys to tell will be given food and beer:-)

Our experiance with Morocco

Hi Fred,

Our experiance with Morocco is great. Absolutly no fear of stealing or violence. Campgrounds everywhere and we had no problems when bushcamping.

Food is not a Morocco strong side, you fast get tired of Tadjine. People outside the touristic areas are very friendly and we got invited to peoples home on several occations.

No troubles intering or driving through western Sahara. Bring a lot of fiches though. If you want to go offroad, it might be best to follow tracks to avoid any tisk of land mines.

We have not entered Mouretania yet, will get back to you regarding that.

Passed through Mauritania a few weeks ago, easy visa at border , used Hamid the fixer , did a great job. Be aware there was no petrol available between Nouadibou and Nouakchott so carry enough. No hassle in Mauritania for us . Got Mali visa and Senegal insurance in Nouakchott . Border at Diama was rubbish , lots of hassle . All part of the adventure ! Senegal< mali and Burkina Faso all great . Road condition excellent . Now in Ghana , probably my new favourite African country.

Short update.

No problem what so ever with Mauretania. More poor people than Morocko sure, but no threats or feelings of insecurity. We actually stayed an extra day because we meet a nice lokal guy who showed us around (no, he did not want any money or anything, exept to change the outside view of his country).

Now in Senegal. Nice country with better roads and more happy looking people:-) Christmas will be spent in Guinea Bissau.
