i will most likely be doing the same route around this time. Should be in the UK by April 2011 (assuming i have not run out of cash or need to stay and work in London at all) and ready to leave around May 2011.
I am reasonably prepared with maps and GPS of Western & Central Europe, Turkey and Russia. No Carnets required, and only visa which need some research is the Russian one. keep us posted on your plans. My trip details are here http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...010-then-51237 Adrian |
Hi Adrian
Will do. Paul |
Preliminary plans (for anyone interested in coming along to input into, change, reject, join for part or all etc.) are shaping up:
Start from 2nd Annual German ADV meet in Niedersolbach, Whitsun weekend, 11, 12 & 13 June 2011 Edit: See post 1 for itinerary. I've been doing a little budgeting and reckon that the basic budget would be around $6,500 (£4,000). That's to cover fuel (19,000 kms), accommodation (82 days, camping/hostel during the week or when on the move and cheap but decent hotel at weekends or whenever stopped for a couple of days), food and personal spending money (beers, visits etc.). The budget assumes a bike already fully prepared and equipped and doesn't take into account visa fees and miscellaneous costs such as gifts, accident/breakdown, laundry, insurance, bribes, ferries and tolls. I'd probably want access to another £1,000 or so on top to make certain that I've got all of that covered and you know what they say, "halve the kit and double the money", though baring disaster, I can't imagine this is going to be significantly more expensive. There's five people expressing interest right now and whilst I hold no false hope that everyone doing so will come along, I do believe that we're going to get a good, small group together for part, if not all of this trip. Let me know if you're interested in coming along; I'm going to try to get the UK guys together in late September/early October for a beer and a chat, probably Dartford area as that seems central to where we each live. Any "expert", experience-based comments on route, milage, budget etc. most welcome too. |
Route
Hi Paul,
Just read your suggested route. Me? Plan to head through Russia/Kaz/Mongolia etc and on to Vladivostok so unfortunately right dates, just wrong place for travel meet. All best to you and others who meet up. Chris |
I'm still in Paul....:DI even bought a Mongolian phrase book on Monday to show willing, although I suspect I'll need to do a bit more prep than that!

Mongolia, Eastern Russia
Interestingly, I have been dreaming of setting up similar trip in 2010. as it turned out, not finding suitable riding partner, I vent for 6 weeks in Morocco. 10'000Km of which about 5'000k of "piste" in Morocco. Needless to say it was great but lots of hard work with my heavy BMW R1200GS Adventure.
Right, your idea of a small group is well in line with my dream project. Unless of course, if having a Swiss in the team is a major showstopper... I Wouls appreciate bein included in the conversation loop. I may be able to fit in a trip to UK for first meeting. Best JB (jean_bernard) |
Hi JB
Swiss no problem at all, all are welcome who can be part of a team. I´m in Estonia right now doing a little tour of the Baltic but I´ll keep you posted about Mongolia when I get back in early September. |
late reply but can you iclude me in the loop,
wanted to do this trip for some time, yet cant find anyone to do it! will be on a xt660z tenere, ready for an adventure...pm me :scooter: |

Hi guys, I'm from Switzerland too and planning a similar trip. I will leave switzerland in april 2011 ,so I will be a couple of month ahead of you, but as I'm not in a hurry (I have 6 months), maybe I will see you all somewhere.
I quite interested about your route, as I'm just now starting to organise mine. Cheers PS: JB from which part of switzerland are you? I'm from Fribourg. |
Took the Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia to the Russian/Mongolian border at Tsaanaguur route in july this year with a Yam 750 super ténéré / sidecar; it's a wonderful trip, so enjoy :funmeteryes:! Most beautiful part was from Tsaganuur through the mountains to Ulaangom, around the lakes and not the main road :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:.

Hi Paul,
Andrew from Australia here. Russell and I plan to do the London to Hong Kong route exactly (or near to it) that you are doing. However we are leaving in May 2011. We arrive in the UK on the 14th May and will set out shortly thereafter after meeting all the rellies (wife is from the IOW). We are doing the ride to raise money for breast cancer. Unsure if we can join up along the way, but would sure be fun. Plan to be in Hong Kong on July 14th or thereabouts. China proving very problemtatic and costly, so route may change (Turkey-Iraq-Pakistan-India-Nepal-Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Oz si the alternative). Can you please keep me in the loop for your planning and dates. Cheers, Andrew |

Certainly will. Even if we don't meet up on route, maybe we can give you a send off from the UK. Best. Paul Ps. i'm guessing you mean Iran, not Iraq! |
Hello Everyone. My name is Roberto and i am planning to go to Mongolia as well. My plans is to leave from Italy in May 2011. I am on my own right now, but would like to partner with someone. An idea would be to proceed to Magadan ( Siberia )the following year.

Ciao Roberto
You'll be a month ahead of us but maybe we'll see you on route! |
I would love to come.
Can you send me a bit more info on the route this sounds like my dream come true.

Several of you have asked for more details of our “Mongolia 2011” trip so I thought I’d collate what we’ve got so far to see if you want to come along. This is not an itinerary; it’s an idea. It can and will be changed based on others ideas and input and how we fare once on the road. It represents what I and, I think, what Belle want to achieve within the timescale that we’ve got.
Rendezvous at the ADVrider 2nd Annual German Meet Whitsun weekend, 11, 12 & 13 June 1011, at Niedersolbach, near Siegen in Germany. Mongolia April 2011
Hi, sorry to jump in on your posts/forum here - would love to join but wrong time of year for me.
Is anyone out there able to do London to Mongolia April 2011? appreciate short notice but any takers? Cheers Craig Vaughan |
Not so lone wolf
I normally go out of my way to travel alone, but have reached a point where a bit of company now and again would be appreciated. It would be nice to keep in touch with some other motorcyclists doing Mongolia/Central Asia this summer.
I set off late May early June and do a very convoluted route through Russia, Mongolia, the 'Stans', into China and Tibet (end Aug), exit to Laos (end of Sept). I don't do cities or hotels too often, but it would be nice to swap tales of daring do and share the occasional beer.:mchappy: |
Quote:
It would be great to meet up and share a beer and tall stories en route if we're close. As you say, let's stay in touch and see what transpires. We're a definite three with maybe and hopefully a fourth. |
Hey Wildman,
I'm heading to Magadan this summer, & will be crossing Mongolia somewhat close to the same time as you, its possible we'll meet up on the way. I'll be heading east from Bulgaria after the HU meeting we're hosting there at the end of May, taking the southern route thru the 'stans. I hope to cross MGL the first couple weeks of July. I'd suggest on your route back, you cut across the southern tip of Moldova, on the main road from Odessa to Bucharest. That way you will bypass Transneister. I wouldnt suggest going thru there without a local to travel with. Doug |
Hi Doug
That would be brilliant if we can meet up on the road and thanks for the tip re Transdneister; good to know. Safe travels! Paul |
Skip Transneister
Hi,
good luck on your trip :) Totally agree with rtwdoug, skip Transneister. I'm from Romania and heard several reports last year of people having trouble at the border (bribes amounting to hundreds of euros). The main road from Odessa to Bucharest is good, I did it twice last year. When in Romania in the central are or near Bucharest, PM me, maybe we can have a beer or have a ride. Also if you need info on places to see/ride, send a mesege anytime. Best of luck, Adrian Quote:

Also, looking at your itinerary, I see that I will probably (plan to be) be just a few days ahead of you returning to Europe. From Almaty I'll head north to Russia and make my way to the Ukraine. I plan to be back in Frankfurt by August 24th, but its very possible I'll be behind at that point and it'd be great to ride along for a few days on the way back if we find ourselves in the same area, Let me know! Jake |
Hello Wildman,
Sounds really good and hence I would be really interested in coming on board but can you just tell me which countries I will need a Visa for as I see you have completed a great deal work in fashioning your plans and itinerary. Also is there a requirement for a carnet. I will be coming from the UK. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Kindest regards Ikram |
Quote:
|
Quote:
No need for a carnet but you'll need visas for Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan before you leave (and Belarus if we plan to do it); we'll get others that we might need en route. We haven't got them yet and should really get round to doing that in the next few weeks (I'm holding things up as I'm moving house next month and I want to get the same address on everything). Best Paul |
Cheers buddy for that info, so now tell me the exact dates if possible so that I can see if its a possibility or a definite, I'm out of the country mid to late March to return back around mid April but I'm guessing that with Visa's still enroute the plan is to leave maybe June/July.

Is there a chance you will be leaving end of june? I was interested but I can't go until 1st of July (till August 31). To catch up 3 weeks is a lot of riding!:innocent:
|
Hi!
We leave mid-June but, as I said above, there's a chance I'll have to delay by a couple of weeks but if I do, I probably won't return until mid-September as it's a big ride for only eight weeks. That said, there's some short cuts built in. Got the meeting tomorrow to decide if I have to work in late-June or early-September so let's wait and see. Best Paul |

We ride from the Easter Weekend from Germany to Vladivostok, but we take the southern Route over the Stans and Mongolia. My Wife and i ride on two KTM LC 4 Adventure, the blue orange ones... See you on the Road1 cheers Bernd |

@Wildman
Any news on your departure date? Gr, Vincent |
Quote:
Won't be confirmed until end of next week but looking very likely we're sticking with the original dates. If that's the case, it'll be a shame for you if you can't get away before 01 July since, as you say, 3 weeks is a long time to make up. I really didn't want this aggravation but it's the biggest business deal I've ever done in this line of work and whilst the client knows I plan to be away and respects what I'm doing, I can't afford to lose the contract. I think they'll wait until I'm back in September and failing that I can offer alternative resources but if it comes to an ultimatum of me in June or forget it, I can't afford to forget it. I'll let you know as soon as I do. Paul |
