Panama to Colombia on Stahlratte
Hey all,
I am a 40 yr old britsh biker riding my harley from Florida to tdf, currently I am in Costa Rica, trying to earn a little cash to cross the Darien Gap///anyone out there want to ride from here to there (on paved roads) with me? I get on the boat on the 25th but aim to be in Panama by the 20th... cheers all Dan |
Dan, one thing that you have to be aware of is that the road to get to where you catch the Stahlratte can be very deep mud at this time of year. A Harley isn't the ideal bike for this (I know... I live in Panama and have one) to say the least.
Be sure to have a backup plan in case you can't get to the boat. |
The road to Carti has recently been surfaced with loose, coarse gravel, we had no problems with the surface (i´m on a BMW R65, ie non-GS). The grades were very steep, but if you take it easy you should make it. However there is a river that needs to be crossed somehow. Dirt bikes can make it through, but the water was nearly a foot over my flat twin cylinders, and the engine subsequently sucked water in and stopped. We had to push it out. You may be able to organise a boat to get across if the river is too high.
