Safty Pakistan KKH

Hi all,

is there anybody traveling in Pakistan and can tell us something about the situation. We are planing a tour coming down from China into Pakistan on the KKH and on to India. But we are not 100% sure if it´s good to do that or not. But we know that it is allways different, when you are in the country. That´s why I ask.

I met two Belgians who came down from China on bikes and they said it was fine. They said you'll probably get an escort from Besham city to Islamabad. I'm heading up the KKH tomorrow. Maybe I'll see you on the road.

Cheers
Mark

Traveled KKH all the way up and down about eight weeks ago...saftey issues between Chilas and Besham, you will be escorted there most likely...other then that enjoy your ride...

We have been riding all the way from China to Lahore this August.
It was not possible to go from Chilas through the Kaghan valley.
But on the KKH between Chilas and Beshamno no problem, just a lot of army and Police beside the road.

Have a good time in Pakistan!

Just rode up from Islamabad to Besham (about 5-6hrs). There were a few police checkpoints but none stopped me. But 30kms out of Besham I had to get an escort into town and now I've got an armed policeman in the lobby. I think there are only two places they will let you stay here. I stayed at the Continental Hotel (2500 rupees). It was cheaper than the govt motel.
I've got a feeling ill be escorted to Chilas tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Hey fellow riders give me a shout when you come to India. We can catch up. I stay in India.

Just rode the KKH to the Chinese border and back. Its completely safe. Lots of checkpoints that you'll need to pull over and fill out your passport details. A bit annoying but the police are all friendly.
Its an amazing part of the world and shouldn't be missed. The road is fantastic from Chilas onwards. Skardu is beautiful too. Have fun

Can anyone give a latest security update on the KKH?

I'm hoping to be riding it in August 2015 coming from China.

in lahore at the moment and if it wasnt so cold Id be heading up there, The tourist guides an the like Ive run in to all recommend to me it is safe.

hcox89 23 Mar 2015 23:06

Thanks Shane,

Good to hear.
Do you think/know if it's worth taking a guide or is it fine to go alone and be passed between police escorts where appropriate?

Cheers

umm everyones security comfort levels are different, Ive a fair idea of the hotels Ill be staying at when I head south, And Ive never done that before having a police escort is stink, Best to just come see how you feel while your here, It is possible is the main thing either way, If you like being hosted the MAP boys will happily host foreigners anywhere in Pakistan apparently, Finding a hotel that will take westerns seems to be hard if you dont take a guide but this is second hand info so far Ill let you about Multan Quetta next week :)

hcox89 30 Mar 2015 11:51

Cheers Shane - agreed it's often best to make a plan once you're in country.
Hope the Quetta leg is a success and appreciate hearing if you discover anything you think would be of interest security wise!
