Sep 2017-UK-Bangkok....anyone?

Hey,

Early planning for UK-Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India-Myanmar-Bangkok is underway.

Leaving September 2017 and returning early December 2017.

Two (so far) experienced travellers on bikes open to company on all or part of the journey but especially the escorted sections.

Questions/interested? Drop me a line.

Chris

hi chris
looking at something along the same lines myself but i was uk Turkey iran to nepal on my own but i think some parts of the trip you need a bit help and backup in a group
what bike are you going on
Patrick

chris.w 31 Jul 2016 22:07

Hi Patrick

Good question. I have a Tiger 800 XCX, Jonny my buddy a GS800. Obviously we both think ours is best so I'm doing 2 weeks around Greece next month on a rented GS just in case I'm wrong.

(Put your money on the Tiger!)

Over land to India August 17

Hello, I'm planning to overland to India, maybe on in to S E Asia if I have the money. I'm flexible with dates. Maybe meet up and travel some of the way?

chris.w 1 Aug 2016 15:05

Absolutely, let me know how your planning goes and keep in touch.

i got a tiger 800xc myself i was in greece 2 years ago fantastic place for riding

coolblackbird 1 Aug 2016 20:52

chris
are you on easy running or hitting the miles everyday.
i want to keep away from cites as much as possible and only hit the miles if i have to.
also a bit of camping but you have to treat yourself with nice hotel as well but i think when in the middle east hotels will cheap need to do a bit of checking.
are you going to be on tight budget.
i want to budget as much as i can.
planning is the big key

Fundog 2 Aug 2016 09:10

Hi Chris

I am very interested in your trip for next year.
I passed my bike test about 6 months ago and also ride a tiger. (fantastic bike I must say.)
I will be doing a few European trips before then to get some experience before embarking on the bigger trip.
Regarding border crossings, carnet and the like I am still in the learning process, so any advice would be great.
As for the return journey, what is route back?
Regards
Ron

chris.w 2 Aug 2016 12:33

Balance is pretty much the word!

Not on a budget as such but camping, rough camping, cheap hotels and the occasional treat (especially in Asia where a treat doesn't have to be expensive) are the way we roll.

Same with miles- some big days where there's nothing to see to make up ground for days when we are near things we are interested in. We are partial to battlefields and military stuff but whatever is your thing we'll accommodate. We like to interact and get a flavour of the culture, food and lifestyle wherever we are. No point if all you see is the inside of your helmet for 3 months. I won't go into detail but we are skilled and experienced in building relationships as we go despite language and cultural barriers. It adds a lot to a trip and can reduce costs and risk.

Splitting up for a few days to ride a particular route or whatever is a good thing.

Borders and carnets- obviously not a problem as far as Iran although I'm not sure when Brexit will kick in. I'll research everything in plenty of time.

Recovery from Bangkok. This was intended to be a true RTW trip but that would mean heading west across the US, fly with bike to Bangkok then ride home- my preferred option. But it would mean starting in March (avoids winter in Europe/US and monsoon in SE Asia) and I can't put it off so I'll cross the US west to east first (with my GF on the back) then set off from here (UK) to Bangkok and then fly home, not as pure a RTW but covering the same ground. I plan to fly or most likely ship the bikes home.

Hope that's useful.

Chris

take a look at this site for carnet
the rac don't seem to be doing it anymore

chris.w 4 Aug 2016 12:32

OK cheers. I'm leaving that side of things for the long winter nights but any info is welcome.

Jim Lad 21 Aug 2016 18:04

Guys, am also interested in this trip. Went UK - Iran - UK earlier this year on a BMW xCountry(650 single) and did not want to turn around and come home.

On the carnet, latest I heard(last week) is that ADAC in Germany are not handling UK carnets now. A friend has contacted the Swiss Auto Club and they will handle Carnet for UK vehicles, and not too expensive.

chris.w 23 Aug 2016 14:20

Jim Lad- I'm still working through your post history. I think we need to meet up. I'll give you a shout next time I'm in London (beer on me).

Unfortunately can't commit until well into next year

Jim Lad 24 Aug 2016 20:32

Sure Chris, happy to meet up, I'm about an hour from London, in Hampshire.

For background, I've written ride reports of my trips in 'another place' UKGSer, under the handle Drumacoon Lad.

Am thinking of going over to HUBB France next month, looking for inspiration for next trip, but certainly interested in this.

chris.w 25 Aug 2016 13:25

No problem. Just scoping interest and 'putting it out there,' no commitment required until money needs to be spent on carnets, visas and flights. In fact flexibility and doing your thing but co-ordinating with others doing similar stuff is how this all works.

chris.w 25 Aug 2016 13:46

Roger. I'm at the overland event this weekend then Greece next month but I get down you way a bit.

Hi Chris,
My partner and I are planning a trip from UK to Australia, planning to leave early August time. We would love to meet up at some point during travels, we will be going fairly slowly, taking about a year for the whole trip.
I see you say that you want to go through Iran. Are you a UK citizen? If so how are you planning to get round the "no independant travel" rules for UK citizens in Iran?
Jon

chris.w 25 Aug 2016 20:01

Hi Jon,

I'm hoping to get into the Overland event this weekend where Lois Pryce is doing an Iran workshop.
I'll be hitting the planning during the dark nights (between ski trips) and with a year to go there's always a chance relationships with Iran will improve and the rules will ease. I have a few contacts tracking that at the moment. Hopefully I'll work something out or it'll have to be Iraq!

Chris

MotoringMosses 26 Aug 2016 08:15

Great, I would love to know how you get on working it all out. I'm going to the overland event tonight, hoping I can pick up a ticket on the gate. I'll be sure to check out Lois' talk.
Jon

The Russler 28 Aug 2016 08:52

I am looking at doing a similar trip but was considering July.. can always be moved though. Iran is an issue at the moment, and it may be necessary to have a "guide" to make it an official tour. Myanmar are not letting vehicles in at the moment (I tried a few months ago as I live in Thailand), however they are signed up to the trans asian highway.

Once i get to Thailand, i am planning on continueing round the world for 2 more years

BMW R1200GSA

chris.w 29 Aug 2016 19:28

You know what....I'm tempted to carry on too. I'll have done a technical RTW when I get to Bangkok and I'll need to get home for the ski season but storing the bike over there and going back to it later is very doable.

I heard the other day that you can get a transit visa which will allow you 18 days to enter and exit Iran by different borders...I'll be looking into it. I know there are a few new rules about foreign bikes going from one region to another in Thailand but it's designed to inhibit locals trading in bikes and not effectively enforced. Just need Myanmar to open fully now!!

eddied1 3 Sep 2016 09:58

Hi All
been a while since I have been on the forum and have just come across the thread. This is something I would be interested in doing and it would be great to have an understanding of numbers etc that are considering going. Would like to continue on after Bangkok if possible.
Currently have 2 bikes a GSA and an old Africa Twin which needs some love after west coast of Africa at end of last year so unsure what I would take.

Cheers
Eddie

chris.w 3 Sep 2016 16:55

Eddie

Having started this thread I'm not sure how it will work out but I'm definitely going! A few people are interested and some have plans which will coincide with mine.

And the moment I'm putting the idea out there with a timeframe. I'm collecting info and 'rehearsing' before I nail the planning over the winter. I'm happy to make it a group trip- probably calling a get together and see who's in, get some idea of the personalities and if we need to adapt the plan before paying out for flights & visas. Im not making myself 'leader' but it's a great route at the ideal time of the year so any planning I do will be available on here.

If anyone wants more detail send me a personal message.

Chris

MotoringMosses 3 Sep 2016 21:34

We will be setting off a bit earlier in the year, and will enter Laos from China in early October (me and the wife 2-up on an F800GS). Planning to spend a good amount of time in south east asia before heading down through indonesia January-February 2018. Would be keen for some company along the way :)

Hi,

I am currently finishing a 3 year ride around the world and I have a mate in Holland and we are planning a similar trip.

Would be very interested in joining in.

Hi Chris & other interested parties
Am planning Aus to U K next year on Tiger xca. If all goes well, should arrive U K in July. Your trip sounds awesome for my return to Aus, so I,ll put having an ale or 2 with you next year on my Goals list, & hope for the best!

Cheers

chris.w 14 Sep 2016 10:38

Mark,

Welcome. You can do the nav since you'll be heading for home and you'll have a nice warm butt on your XCA.

Which route will you be taking here?

Chris

bonnieo 14 Sep 2016 12:44

Chris
At this stage I'm thinking air freight Perth to K L. 6 weeks or so around Thai, Cambodia & Laos then join group across Myanmar if possible, Bangladesh, Himalayas, Stans, Russia, Europe, U K.
Much to think about between now & then for virgin intercontinental biker, but what can possibly go wrong !!!!!!
At very least want to reach Tibet, then if all good & lovin' it, keep on rollin.
Have family & friends in U K & have never seen North of Yorkshire.

Mark

chris.w 14 Sep 2016 14:12

That's a good choice and there are some excellent books covering that journey (with a nip into China) plus going back the southern route will make it epic.

Keep in touch.

Here's the route- call it 9,000 miles.
Still working on the visa for Iran.

kaioxygen 10 Nov 2016 10:54

Hi again Chris,

I was originally planning to do this route in reverse from Nepal but it seems most people are going this was so it will be much cheaper to jump on the band wagon!

I'm 100% for it but I'm still waiting for confirmation for the time off from work.

Let's keep in touch.

Hi Chris

I wrote earlier and I am still keen. I am currently touring Peru, Ecuador and colombia on a China bike . Writing this from the Galapogas.

I am very keen to do this trip. I would have to buy a bike whern I am in the Uk in January and store it for a few months - but do not see that as a problem. I will probably buy a V strom 650 as I have had great experiences on this bike and did 60000km through Europe, Morocco, Turkey and New Zealand

1. do you have a start date in Sept?

2. I have a NZ and UK passport and I have been told by the Iranian embessy I will have no visa problems.

3. I will be in UK in January and april . I am happy to meet . After that I will be in the USA .

I have a fair bit of bike touring and travel experience. also if any iof the group are going on to NZ would be happy to host/help out.

Look forward to hearing from you

I may be travelling through Turkey and Iran later in 2017. I am UK based but meeting friends in Greece, then continuing to Turkey, Iran and returning via Turkmenistan but would be interested in joining up for Turkey/Iran.

I am at the very early planning stage and flexible on time. I like the sound of the 7 day visa from Hossein, but open to other possibilities.

Hi Chris, I've just found this thread. I am very interested in this.
Im in Manchester so not too far away to meet up if needed.
At the moment I have a R1200GS LC. But I would probably change that for something a bit smaller. (another big problem - what to chose.)
Will pm you my details if its not too late.

chris.w 11 Jan 2017 19:22

We now have a hardcore of six on this trip and a big enough group. I've left the thread up for anyone who is interested, happy to chat about any aspect of it.

Hey Chris

Is this trip still going ahead?

I'm planning a trip from London to Melbourne July/Aug 2017 (although really flexible with dates).

Planning to cut across Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan... and that's about as far as the planning got as I stumbled across China... which I can't afford to travel through solo.

I was originally looking to go through Turkey & Iran but couldn't find anyone to travel with... until I came across this thread.

Would love to join a group to explore a few countries with...

Cheers Chris

bike freight Bangkok to UK

Hi Guys, trip sounds good, (I work on UK to BK , via the Stans) + hopefully back thru Georgia-Turkey this year. Anyway, we'll have a few bikes to ship back from Bangkok to UK in mid October, if any of you guys are looking for freight back from Bangkok, we could have some container capacity for bikes/small van, truck. We generally book a container, either 20-40 ft, and include all the paperwork to clear customs out from Thailand + a UK receiving agent and warehouse to receive the bike. Happy to price, if any bikes looking for a ride home!

kawazoki 31 Jan 2017 11:32

How you going to enter Thailand....? New rules for foreign registered bikes from January of this year.

Safe ride

chris.w 8 Feb 2017 16:22

Hmmmm

The changes in Thailand have presented some issues but it's still a while away and I'm hoping that by the time we get there some clarity will have developed on what exactly the rules are and how they are being enforced then a selection of companies who will vie for my money to make it all work.

Worst case scenario- ship out of Myanmar.

Chris

chris.w 13 Feb 2017 12:54

It's worked out that we now have a plan to run two teams of four which will come together for the escorted sections of the route.

Fancy joining us? Drop me a line.

Chris

chris.w 28 Feb 2017 23:39

Are you still shipping back from BKK? Seems that since the new rules have come in shipping is also a lot more difficult.
