Simpson dessert French line mid May.

Is anyone crossing the Simpson around mid may or would be up for joining for the French line section?

How will you be planning for fuel supplies to cover from Birdsville to Mt Dare?

MotorcycleRider 12 Apr 2016 11:22

I'll be riding an XT660Z which has a 23L tank. I'll also be carrying a 20L fuel bladder 20 Litre Collapsible Jerry Can - Liquid Containment Bladders & Liners – Fuel, Water, Petrol, Diesel, Water Storage. That should give me 43L.

I need to do some calculations over the next few weeks to check the fuel useage of the bike to see if that's enough or not, if not i'll add an additional smaller bladder as required.

Booked the time off work today, leaving Sydney first thing Friday 22th May heading to Birdsville, looking to cross on the 25th

43L should do it easy.3 years ago I did Oodnadatta to Birdsville solo via the Rig Road / French Line / QAA with 43L on a KLR - around 650km total - and arrived in Birdsville with exactly 1 litre in my tank.

There is plenty of traffic in the Simpson if you can't find another rider. On day 3 I met a bunch of 4WDers and teamed up with them. Being able to ride without luggage was a sheer pleasure by comparison to lugging 40kg of fuel, water, food and gear.

I've just actually order 5 x 5L Dessert fox fuel bladders from Desert Fox 5L Fuel Cell instead of the Liquid Containment 20L.

That should give me space for 48L in total if I need to. Also being smaller I should be able to spread the weight more by putting them in the panniers/on the back. After the ride I'll sell 4 of them, they are a good bit cheaper importing than Aus retail so hopefully won't loose any money.

I will also have 10L MSR Doomsday for water and 3L in a camelback.

It would be great to meet some 4WDers to carry some luggage. I've done sand/dunes across Morocco on a TTR600 which was nice and light so was good fun but still hard. I know a loaded up Tenere will be a different game.
