Singles have more fun, Mongolei, Altai, Pamir, Iran, Germany :)
Hello all together,
after my trip for the BAM this year my loyal 640 is still standing in Ulaanbataar. Target next year is to bring it home to Germany. Timeschedule is 6 Weeks, August and the first 2 Weeks of September. Maybe i can add another one or two in July. To give an answer to "single have more fun" now my plans. I see 3 parts of the journey. Mongolia to Pamir: i figured out some trails in Gobi and Altai on satellite pictures, but couldn't find them on maps. So i expect everything a good enduro driver loves. On a packed big bike it can't be fun anymore so single cyclinder bikes like my 640er are the best choice. Pamir, the Stans, Iran: I will not go for difficult tracks in this countries just average roads. So everbody is welcome in this part. Approximatly i'll be there in middle of august. the rest of the journey is not detailed yet. Maybe i go for some trails in the Balkanregion, Romania, Georgia or somewhere else. I will make this decision on the run cause it depends on the progress before. Who is this German? Mechanic & Engineer, 32 Years old, needs a lot of time for fotographes and videos. A good offroad average for me are 150km, onroad 350km and i don't complain in case more then a 1000km are necessary for transfer. If a hotel costs less then 30€ you will have to force me to camp. examples what i did with the 640 in past: Siberia 2016 Balkan 2015 |
I'll be heading in the opposite direction so I'll keep an eye out for you!

hey Maikel,
i did nearlly the same trip this year, but after the pamir i went to uzbekistan and back up to kazakhstan then across the caspian sea and back home to germany i planed to cross turkmenistan, but i didn't get a visa so check that out first, i met quite a lot of people who didn´t get a visa you also know you need a carnet for iran? i also only had 6-7weeks for the trip, that's why I decided against crossing iran, just to much hassle and money for the short time beeing there your planning of the 150km/day (offroad) and 6 weeks traveltime doesn't fit together I did more like 250/day offroad, less countries and my first complete rest day was on the ferry on the caspian sea ;) i was fine with the time i had to spend it could be done in less days, but i guess you would miss some of the nice offroad riding stuff and sometimes have to stick to the bigger roads |
Hey moep,
Thanks for your information. I discussed these issues already in Ulaanbataar with other travellers that came from that direction. It’s strange that some people seem to get their visa for Turkmenistan without problems and some not. I’ll order a twice entry visa for Russia anyway so I will have the option for the north route too. The Carnet for Iran is no problem, I have it anyway. Our shipping company insisted on it for transport and storing. So it’s just the Visa costs in my case. I didn’t check that very detailed yet. It’s still too far away ;-) I know I have around 12000km to go and I don’t expect much gravel after Pamir. With the around 40 theoretical riding days it’s an average of 300km a day. So If I waste time I have to catch that up another day. That’s why I wrote about my preferred average and the fact that I don’t care how long a transfer day is. In case it’s necessary I drive home from eastern turkey in 4 days. It’s not fun but if it means more fun the rest of the trip it’s a small sacrifice. I can reach these countries easier and have visited most of them already. |
