South America - 2 up - on a harley
I am 59, my wife is still stuck at 49, and we spent Jan, Feb, and March of 2005 riding 2 up through Mexico and every Central American country to the Panama Canal. Now we want to ride South America in a similiar fashing, starting sometime late this fall. Just beginning the planning for this trip so the route and schedule is very flexible at this point. Not interested in any camping, but rather budget type accomodations. Who is interested in joing us on this adventure.

Sorry we are not in a position to join you at the moment but we would love to be able to! We are also 50 somethings (well nearly in MOH case) and spend all our free time touring on Harleys in the UK and Europe. We are looking at broadening our horizons but I am considering using bikes a bit more suitable to dirt roads for these trips. One thing which would worry me using Harleys on unmade roads would be the damage done by stones and grit to the belt drive. I would hate to see a really inviting road and then not be able to ride it because I was worried the bike wasn't up to it or for fear of damaging it.

Why stop there? Why not continue with me over to OZ etc ...see my post earlier today. |
Hey,
Would love to talk to you about your trials and tribulations through mexico and central america. My hubby and I are planning a trip through SA. but probably late 2007. Can't decide if I should ride my own F650. Are the roads fairly easy through Cental america? |

Roads were never problem, but we certainly did not travel in the rainy season. The few difficult sections were usually less than 30 miles and very doable. Assuming you have riding experience, you should not have any problems. Just picture a ride up to Powell River, only way longer and way better. Contact me through my email and I will share some of our experiencs with you. 2006 would be a better year to travel than 2007. You do not have to wait as long. |

[B]Sorry we are not in a position to join you at the moment QUOTE] No question, a different bike would certainly be more suitable for some of the roads through Mexico and Central America. However, for those of us who ride Harleys, the total experience is ofter much more than just motorcycle performance. For the most part roads are paved, and travel on gravel or dirt roads were usually limited to less than 30 mile stretches. Harley Davidson does make a replacement belt that can be installed without removing the wheel. Suppose to work real good in an emergency as it can be installed on the side of the road. Contact me through my email. Would love to get information about touring through Europe. |
harley belt
that harely belt you (LEND) mentioned sounds like a great piece of kit, my lady and I will be crossing the states, mexico , central america and beyond, leaving next week, we are having last minute jitters about the HArley, after seeing 99% of people doi that trip on a Beemer....neither of us are at all mechanically minded, but at least i am comfortable on my fat HOG!

2 up on a Harley
Wish I was going with you. Sure you will have some problems, no matter what type of a bike you ride. But that is why you travel in this fashion. Otherwise, you would just vacation on some escorted tour. I still have that emergency belt in my saddle bag, never used; so I still do not know how well it will work. The link below is to a blog I kept during our South America trip which records all of our problems, adventures, etc. Keep in mind, the blog was recorded for people who would never travel in this fashion, for people who have never been on a bike, for family, and for other motorcyclists.
My wife and I will be spending Jan, Feb, Mar, in Mexico, and of course, traveling with the Harley. Profile for 1life - Canada |
