South America 2017
Just putting my intended route out there. Not specifically looking for travel partners but if people are in the same area, could meet up for a pint/exchange live route info.
I'm heading to Buenos Aires at the start of November, riding down through patagonia to Ushuaia. Then coming up through Chile, maybe to catch the some of Dakar in January. After that, continue to explore south America, cross the Darien gap about May/June. And doing the Trans America trail August / September. Well that's the plan anyway. |
Are you shipping your bike into Argentina? I'm curious what company you are using ... how much? BTW, your timing weather wise is PERFECT. You will be able to see all of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego at best time of year.
What bike? bier |

The bike is a DRZ 400. The shipping is with moto freight and is £1375 at this end. I expect it'll go above 1500 by the time it's out of Argentine customs.
James cargo is about £4-500 more expensive. There are other cheaper options, but I didn't want to risk the delays of shipping on a boat and the saving wasn't really enough to justify it. I think getting a group container is probably the cheapest option if you can find people going at the same time/destination. I was originally planning on shipping to Canada and doing Alaska, then down the Americas, but the weather works out a lot better going this way at this time of year. |
Or you could avoid shipping at all ... simply buy that bike here in California for probably less than in UK.
Both S and E models for sale here daily. I would take the S for travel as elec. output is better as well as gearing is higher for road work. But I'm guessing your bike is on it's way ... so ALL GOOD and best of luck! October to March is perfect time for traveling Mexico, Cent. America. Once in S. America it's always a crap shoot at any time. But for Tierra del Fuego, November through March is the perfect time also, so you are good there. Northern and central Argentina will be brutally HOT from Nov. to April. Coastal Chile is cooler, stay high or near Ocean for cooler temps. |

Hey everyone,
Just thought i'd update this with current plans. Looking to be in Ushuaia by the 21St December. Deciding how long to stay before heading up Chile on the carreterra austral.getting to see the Dakar go past is still a possibility but don't want to missed opportunities in Chile for it. If you happen to be in similar places and want to meet for a beer or something, feel free to pm me. |
