Thailand - (Cambodia - Laos) - Thailand - Myanmar (April 2018)
Morning all!
I have been planning my trip around the world on my motorcycle since the start of the year. Now dates are starting to firm I am keen to make some contacts to assist each other with cost sharing through the typical problem countries! I plan on LEAVING Myanmar into India on the 25/04/2018 to meet up with a friend in India to ride through India and Nepal (Himalayas and mountainous regions) for a month and a half. That being said i would be looking for humans in arms to accompany and share costs for anywhere between 7-14 days in Myanmar (so entering Myanmar from Thailand between 11-18/04/2018) , Transit time (2-3days) from Laos to Myanmar through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia if we enjoy each others company enough, and again Transit through Thailand (2-3 days) From Malaysian border through to Cambodian border. I will firm dates for the Thai side of things if i get some interested parties. I would like to spend more time in Thailand but the costs of doing so with a motorcycle and guide just seem stupid expensive at the moment! I am thinking about devising a plan to transport the bike to storage at the border, hiring scooters to burn around on for a few weeks, organising for the bike to be at the Cambodian border when i leave, then once I get to the Laos/Thai Border, doing a transit tour from there to Myanmar to start the Myanmar Tour. Anyone is welcome to join on any part of this leg! Entry to India is a hard date however anything through Malaysia - Thailand - Cambodia - Laos - Thailand is not at the moment unless I have inmates with solid dates that I can join up with to reduce costs. Thailand's restrictions really have been a thorn in my side as it is basically the gatekeeper for my onward travels its very frustrating as I don't enjoy bleeding money however anyone willing to share in my pain is welcome :thumbup1: Anyone is welcome on my trip, I am an Australian leaving Canberra on 01/01/2018 to be in Darwin to ship to Dili two weeks later. From Dili the usual island hop through Indonesia to catch the Onion Boat onward to Malaysia! From India it will be Pakistan-Iran-Turkey-Greece then through Europe to meet a friend to travel through Europe for a while! From there it will be Africa then once I've decided I can't go back to my old life it will be shipped to South america to continue the adventure. Look forward to hearing from you guys! Ben. |

Are you planning on heading west or east. I will be heading west from Cambodia at the beginning of Feb. I got this quote based on two riders entering Myanmar.
Dear Dan, If you are decided to do this trip for sure , we can go accordingly - - send your particulars ( ppts plus bikes) as mentioned in "Procedure". - let me know at least 30 days (45 days better )ahead for fixed incoming date. - one day ahead of your arrival , my service team will be at the border to welcome you and facilitate formalities. - I'll send an invoice , only for 2 ppts / 2 mbs , that is usd 3780 and please transfer 25% usd 945 , let's say usd 1,000. In return for early bird reservation , will give you discount usd 180 ( so you will have to pay 3780 minus 180 = 3600 minus advance 1,000 = 2600 at that time you confirm the incoming date. If 4 ppts / 4 mbs or 6 / 6 at that time , you will get discount usd 230 and 300 respectively for early bird. No need to worry for your money because there is cancellation policy ( mentioned in Procedure ). Not that I'm lobbying , you are entirtled to your own opinium. I'm just saying for goodness sake of both sides. Feel free for everything at anytime. Warm regards, Tin |
Heading west like yourself tin but sounds like you may be a bit early for me? I was planning April to enter Myanmar but I think I'm pretty flexible on the timing in April as I am undecided on whether to ship my bike from Australia to silk or fly it to Bali or something as the few hundred dollars difference in shipping will pale in comparison to going through Myanmar with a group which could save much more!

Hello!
We are a French senior couple travelling around the world with our campervan (small one on a Fiat Ducato, NOT a motorhome!!!). We would be interested in joining for crossing Myanmar at the beginning of April 2018. The route is a bit different from what is on Burma Senses' website (14 days, 13 nights) so that some legs of the journey have been extended (for instance Mandalay-Kalaymio 363 KM/8 hrs) one leg instead of 2. We are not interested in accomodation. What is the price difference for that? At the moment, our vehicle is in Australia and will be in Singapore by mid-November. We whish to be kept in the loop. Looking forward to reading you again. |
Hi Marianne,
I will need to get in contact with BurmaSenses again to see about how they would deal out the costings given you would likely be sleeping in your campervan. Was the itinerary i posted earlier ok with you? I anyone else is interested in joining in on the dates below let me know so I can firm up the details for anyone interested so both myself and others can get a bit more serious about this. |
Hi!
About the itinerary we would prefer a longer one, like the one which is on Burma Senses' website 14 days/13 nights (crossing by motorhomes). The first and last legs of the trip are splitted in two. In this case we would need a new quote with an option without accomodation. We wish to take advantage of this crossing to see as much as possible of Mayanmar. We remain open to discuss further on about that. Hope more people will be interested in this project. |
Hey guys,
I'm also looking for a group for the Myanmar crossing, March or April 2018. I'D be able to join the group in Thailand before the border crossing. Did you already book anything? Please have a look at this thread, it sounds to me like money can be saved by booking directly with the operator and not a middle man: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...a-senses-87821 I think it's worth checking with these guys directly. Osuga Myanmar Travels - info@osugamyanmartravels.com Myanmar Senses - English speaking guide Soe Myint Htay - soe060@gmail dot com I hope to hear back from you guys! |
Ok this is great, we have some reasonable numbers now that should make it quite a bit more affordable.
Firstly let's agree on a date of entry for Myanmar. Is the 05/04/2018 fine with everyone for a meet up at the Mae Sot border? If any of you want to meet up a little earlier in Thailand or through Thailand to share some costs through there we can figure out that one as well. As mentioned before I'll be doing a blast from Malaysia into Cambodia through Thailand so it costs as little as possible on that leg then spend time in Cambodia and Laos. From there I would like to figure out a way to spend a reasonable amount of time in Thailand while eventually making my way to Myanmar. Whether that being able to store my bike and hire a local scooter or store the bike at one of the borders. The dates of my second entry into Thailand will be up for debate dependant on my options to extend my stay in Thailand without the cost of the damn guide! If anyone is interested in this leg let me know, I'm going to work on a reasonable solution this week. Back to Myanmar, Number of days: since there are potentially 4 of us, maybe more I don't mind doing a few more days but we will see what the cost comes out as for 14days/13 nights before deciding definitively on this. I will contact that local guide and osuga. We will see how we go with the local guide as we require more than just the guide to come along with us and whether that guy knows everything that is required for us to cross without any border and authority hassles is yet to be determined. Let me know your thoughts guys! Ben. |
So an update.
I received the below regarding staying in the motorhome: Also one things , i would like to tell about the Motohome couple . We can not arrange all the places without hotel because of our Government policy. Some of the places are Prohabit area and can not sleep in your motohome and must be stay at hotel . So now I check the places which can stay without hotel . ( 7 Nights is ok can stay without hotel and 7 places is not ok , must to stay hotel ). So i already quote everything in price . please check and please let me know openly . So given that the quote and itinerary as below. At the moment it's assumed two bikes and the motorhome. Hi everybody!!!
MYANMAR 1 - We are OK with April 5th, 2018 as the entering date in Myanmar. 2 - Thank you for accepting a longer trip (14 days). 3 - We understand it's not possible to stay in the motorhome in all places because of the Government policy. 4 - You say "it is assumed there are 4 people (2 bikes + the motorhome)". It would be interested that people who participated to the thread confirm their intention. 5 - Thank you for getting quotes from Osuga and/or others. We will ask a French agency (Gulliver travels and tours) for a quotation (for 4 or 5 participants) and we'll see if there is any difference. THAILAND (to BMP 776) Copy of your message : "stay in Thailand without the cost of the damn guide!". We are presently working on the new regulation for travelling thru Thailand with a foreign vehicle. So far, we did not hear about "a guide"!!! What is your information about this subject? where did you get the latest up date? Might be easier to write directly throu our personal email addresses on this subject. Loking forward to reading you all back. |
Read this regarding Thailand:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...7th-june-88229 Apparently their may still be some borders you can cross without the permit but I feel it's only a matter of time until they're all enforcing the new rules. Agreed it would be great to get a check in of who is a definite for this trip. We should be able to collectively lay down our individual deposits against the quote reference number with the operator once we have some agreement from anyone who may want to join or who has already decided to join. For one, I am in. |
Hey Guys,
I'm 90% in as well. Thanks for getting in touch with these tour guides, let's see what they come back with. I'm sure they know ways to reduce the price or at least get a local (not foreign) company to do it, if booking such a thing via a company from another country gives me a big feeling of "Damn I could have saved half the money". Anyway, I will meet you at the border, I'm entering with a bike registered in Malaysia so I luckily can roam around freely in Thailand. |
I only just realised that the post I sent regarding the quote didn't show all of the information including the quoted prices!

So....
To get this locked in we need a 20% deposit. They will require the remaining amount in cash at the border which I informed Zawmin (my company contact) I would be fine with and I assume you guys will also be ok with this? I am not sure about you guys but I would be much happier laying down my own individual amount for the deposit. If we all agree to this I will provide you with payment details and Quote number to make a deposit against. I will send you both (and anyone else who may be interested in joining) a personal message with my email so we can communicate directly to solidify the plan. |
How many people are we now? (including me)
|
It's 4 at the moment.
I would think it's likely to be more once we draw closer to the date. |
because of the new Thai regulation
Sorry guys!!! We won't be with you for this Myanmar crossing. We were already looking forward to meeting you and enjoying together this fantastic country. BUT... the new Thai regulation says motorhomes and campervans CANNOT APPLY for a permit to travel in Thailand. Consequently, instead of visiting Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, we will ship our campervan to India (it is presently in Sydney where we will be in a few days). See the below mail we received from the Department of Land Transport. We also had negative answers from travel agencies.
We are sure there is still plenty of time for other people to join. Good luck. Enjoy!!! Marianne & Bernard Dear Madam, Please be informed that the current regulation on foreign registered vehicles does not allow foreign registered motorhome to enter Thailand regardless of its weight. The attached document is English summary of said regulation, which is available for download on Department of Land Transport Official Website. You can find the summary at the bottom of this page. https://www.dlt.go.th/th/public-news/view.php?_did=1224 Sincerely, International Transport Affairs Sub-division| Planning Division | Department of Land Transport 1032 Phaholyothin Road, Chatujak District, Bangkok 10900 THAILAND Tel. +66 2 271 8409 | Fax. +66 2 271 8409 |
So we are only two at the moment I guess!
Come on guys get your adventure on and take a trip to South East Asia and join us on this trip through Myanmar  |
I'd say let's find some more people before we fix things, I'm sure we can drop the price and get a bit a bigger group! I will spend some time posting in different groups/websites next week and try to find more ppl. I'd like to put the price below 1K if possible... I will send you a PM so we can discuss further. Meanwhile, if YOU read this and are looking for a group to cross Myanmar give us a shout! I think we can also be a bit flexible with the dates...Cheers!
|
Hey guys,
I´m Olli, 21 years old from Munich, Germany. If we could start in Thailand 2- 3 weeks later, i would love to come with you! The matter is, i will start in Ho Chi Minh City on March 1st, so it would be a really tight schedule for me to be in Thailand only a month later... Cheers, Olli |
Hi Olli,
I am a little flexible in starting later into Myanmar, but probably not 2-3 weeks as I will be meeting a friend in India to go along the Himalayas with and that part is fairly inflexible. I could start a week later max i would say but would need to confirm. |
By the way, what are your plans for Thailand?
@bmp: Youß´ve got a PM. |
Hi Olli,
Check your messages, I have a few options to tackle Thailand at this point in time. If anyone else is interested in joining this group for entry into Myanmar on the 12-13th of April let us know. |
Australia to Europe!
Hi!
I just sent you a PM, but if anyone else is riding Asia to Europe via Pakistan-China-Kyrgyzstan, and will be looking for groups to cross China together, please let me know! Elisarw@gmail.com I should be in Jakarta by early December, and KL by Christmas (I think). Would love to cross northern Pakistan as early in 2018 as possible. June?? |
I was thinking of riding up to the Hunza Valley in Pakistan around June if you want to team up. However I will most likely head south west after that into Iran as having yet another escorted tour will have my funds depleting faster than I am comfortable with after crossing Myanmar, Then to Nepal in a festival season which requires an expensive permit and a guide for that time..and potentially more guide costs for Thailand.
P.M replied by the way! |
So,
Olli has dropped out due to the costs of his proposed journey so we are down to two once again :( now would be great time for people to decide to cross Myanmar overland in April :thumbup1: |
Is there any other way cutting down cost? Tbh, I even wouldn't mind packing the bike in thailand and shipping to india, it will still be cheaper than the tour... However, I'd like to ride through Myanmar myself...
|
Asside from doing exactly that we can only hope we get some more interested parties the closer we get to the date of arrival which likely could still happen. Tour guide is still checking periodically how we are going and keeping tabs on dates in case he gets any groups looking to travel at the same time.
|
Hi Ben,
Where r u right now? Dec 19. I am in Vietnam, next sunday in Hoi An and riding to the nortb of Vietnam going into Laos and maybe Cambodia. Would like to join you in any of those countries but I am taking my time, no rush.. Let me know where you are at.. Greetz, Mia |
Still in Australia doh
I leave for Bali on the 4th of Jan, entering Malaysia early Feb and making my way to Thailand-Cambodia-Laos over Feb-March. If you are still around then for sure we can team up! |
Hi
I'm looking to travel from Thailand (Mae Sot) to India (Moreh) over these dates. From your post you sound like you are doing the same but the itinerary below suggests India to Thailand. Which direction are you heading in? Thanks Quote:
|
Thailand to India is the route, that route must have been from earlier on when I wasn't paying attention!
So it looks like we have 3 of us total in at the moment but we are working to a faster timeline to save money. Looking like 7 days to cross entering between 12-16 of April. If this is ok with you i think we should get new quotes and firm this up. Getting tired of people coming in and pulling out haha |
I've seen you have had some people unable to commit or change plans on you, sorry to see that. Before I sign on can I grab some more details from you, I also want to be as transparent as possible with my plans and thoughts so I dont set any incorrect expectations with you.
It sounds like you are going through much faster than you were originally planning to save money, if I am involved is there scope or interest from either of you to lengthen out again? Can you give me details of the route you're taking and any cost (PM me and I can give you my email address if you dont want it publicly shown here - I haven't posted enough to be allowed to PM yet). Did you know that the Myanmar New Year water festival is on over the period you are travelling? Are you planning on stopping for a day in a town to get involved with that? All my cards on the table; you're heading in about six days later than I hoped which means spending more $ on Thai guides etc... A few days here and there would be OK but a week gets pricey. I'd have to balance out any saving for Myanmar with the additional expense of Thailand whilst potentially having to rush through Myanmar at a much quicker pace than I am hoping - especially when there is a big ass festival on (I'm planning 10 days). Would you both be up for spending more time in Myanmar and getting in a few days earlier if it wasnt cost prohibitive? I'm trying to work out if I can make my plans align with yours without cutting too much of this part of my trip out. That said I see that your plans have already moved a lot so understand if you dont want to (or logistically cannot) make any further adjustments; the itinerary referenced in my earlier post is pretty much what I am hoping to do (albeit in reverse). Let me know what you think C |
So the new proposed route is:
Myawaddy kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock) to Yangon Uppatasanti Pagoda Shwesandraw Pagoda Monywa Kale Tamu roughly 1500km in 7 days. I can see if the others are interested in bringing the dates a bit closer as opposed to the 16th. Might I suggest you get into Thailand at a small border crossing to avoid the need for a Thai guide which will in turn skyrocket your expenses in Thailand. I for one am resolved to try at small border crossings as there are many reports of crossing the border without hassle, albeit only at the smaller crossings. Potential guide informed me of that festival and while I would like to it probably involves extending the trip, which doesn't bother me but it may bother the others. I think what we really need to do is agree on number of days (perhaps a compromise for everyone so we are all relatively pleased and not bitter at anyone) and an entry date that suites us all and then get some quotes. Once we have actual prices I feel everyone will be much more comfortable committing to a slightly extended stay in Myanmar. Communication with the other two is a bit patchy because they are already riding around, patchy access to internet or just too busy so hopefully within a week we can get some more solid dates and timelines. Regards, Ben. |
Hi Ben
I hope your trip is going well so far. Did you hear from the others? |
We have three at the moment, and the tour guide may be getting a few more, he has interested parties for mid April.
