Tibet & China Self-Drive in May 2014 - searching for companions
Hi there
we are currently planning a self-drive trip through Tibet and China for approx. May 2014. The trip starts in Nepal and ends in Mongolia! We are traveling with our own caravan (MB Unimog 435). ....www.glaarkshouse.com if you want to know more about us.... To share the costs for tour operator, organization and obligatory guide we are searching for companions (with own car) who would like to do the the same route - timing is still flexible! The trip could look like this: - we're currently in contact with several operators - Nepal, Zhangmu, Mt. Everest BC, Lhasa, Korkor Nor Lake, Lanzhou, Xi’an, Luoyang, Pingyao, Taiyuan, Datong, Beijing, Urangab, Erlianhaote, Mongolia Approximately 30 days from May 2014 Should you be interested let us know. Cheers Jen & Peter |
Nepal to Mongolia via Tibet & China is confirmed!
Hi there
we are already 2 cars/4 people starting from Nepal in May 2014 to cross Tibet & China into Mongolia. Duration approx 30 days. Costs/car around EU2'500 for a 3 car/6 people setup. (and less if more cars are joining). Visa, permits, reg plates, tour guide (and accommodation) etc. is included. Only petrol and own food additional. Let us know! Cheers Peter |
Hi Peter,
that's a really good price! Through which agency did you book the trip? We are planning to enter China from Kyrgystan and exit to Laos in May 2014... so if you know overlander with the same idea, let us know. Thanks for the information! Johanna |
Hi Peter, I'm currently planning a May 2015 crossing of China from Nepal to Kyrgyzstan, or possibly from Pakistan, looking for any info or advice from people who have dealt with the trip, so wondering how it went for you, what company you used?
Thanks, Ryan |

One of our client is planning a China crossing trip from Nepal to Kyrgyzstan in April 2015, he just entrusted me to look for some more travelers to share the fee, so would you like to join in? Thanks, Bing Liang |
Hi Ryan and sorry for my late reply! We are currently in Ladakh/India
without any reliable internet access! But what you can guess now is that we did NOT drive through Tibet! We were scheduled to enter Tibet on May 5, 2014 and on May 4 we learned that the region around Naqu was closed for tourist self-drives. There was only one option left: leave our 28 years old Unimog in the hands of a chinese driver who should drive 1200 km and three 5000 meter passes! To cut a long story short: we said "no"! Hence, we are still in India and will drive through Myanmar in November. From Thailand we will see. Either China (without Tibet) or shipping to South America. So to answer your questions: we were dealing with "Chengdu Greatway Tour". They have all kinds of names depending on your language. If you google them you will find their website in english. It was clearly not their responsibility that the Chinese government closes one region in Tibet. Oh, by the way, two days later they also closed the region around Mt Kailash! Anyway, based on our experience with Tibet and based on the experience of friends of us (a group of three cars) who planned to drive from Nepal passed Mt Kailash into Kyrgistan (that is the Torugat pass, correct?) and whose trip was also cancelled I would be very careful with any self-drive through Tibet. It is not predictable if the tour will happen! What pretty Certainly works is Laos <-> Mongolia and Laos <-> Kyrgistan. Hope that helps! Good luck Peter |
